just curious what the cost is for the briggs and kohler motor are with the reduction drives and how much they weigh. i'm going to build a (small ) airboat with a vw motor and reduction drive and it will put out 75 to 80 hp. and weighs 183 lbs. with the reduction drive and can be duplicated for $ 32-3400 dollars with choice of reduction ratio's

you can get a 35 briggs right now for around 1950.00 plus shipping and the reduction unit is like 520.00 , and to beef the motor up their are alot of diff things you can do from 500.00 to about 4000.00 but the most I've seen is 61 hp out of the 35 block , but 2500.00 is around what that engine setup will run you plus shipping wwww.smallenginewarehouse.com on ebay

thanks with the reply snapper i wanted see how cost compared to my vw. any idea what the complete engine weighs?

Scooter, I am running a VW 1600 with bg bore jugs and duel Impe carbs, and turn a 52x26 wide blade 3500.It is real snappy, an I only have about $800.00 in it.

engines shipping weight is 185 but I don't know if that is the true engine weight or not , seems like i remember seeing it weighing closer to like 160 or osmething but its somewhere in that region and the reduction weighs around 20ish pounds more 200 lbs would probably be safe to say for motor and reduction unit , I think your weights will be close to the same with what you posted for your vw setup , but you'll get more hp out of your vw .

just curious gary was that a pic of youre boat that was on here in the last week or two if it was that was a sharp looking rig. i've been working up to building a vw boat for a couple of years and with gas prices the way they are it might be the only way i can afford to keep boating. i'm a little dissapointed it won't be considered a mini though

Thanks for the info snapper it's been years since i have worked on a briggs twin but i remember how heavy the 18 horse on my mower was when i removed it for a rebuid and thought my vw motor and reduction would weigh less.

Yes, it I built it 5 years ago for my dad and uncle to use gigging mullite and flounder. They kept busting outboards. We first put it on a 14' john boat and it did good for them. both of them past away and my step mom said come git it. I ran for a little while like that and then found a old busted 10' hull for $50.00 and fixed it and changed all the metal works to what you see. I have gave it to my 8 year old to claim. That is why it is called Dawson's Go Bug, for two reasons, everybody says he has a go bug in his pants when we ride. and because of the bug motor. I am building a 13 1/2 x 7 caddy boat for me. But it is nice to be ale to ride hard all day and night on 10 to 15 gallons of pump gas with the go bug.
