Priming Aluminum.

Any one heard of a primer for aluminum that is self etching?
and if so, who sells it and what is it called? Thanks, Kevin.

I install sprayed on liners and paint hulls for a local aluminum boat builder.I use a self etching primer made by Nason, which is produced by DuPont. It is an excellent product.I've used it for years without a problem. The most important thing with aluminum is cleanliness. If it's not clean nothing will stick to it.
I can't remember the specific part numbers for the primer and reducer, but I can look tomorrow for you if you need them.

small jobs west marine or napa carry a zinc chromite primer that is self etching for alum or find a Terry's auto (probably others ) and get a SEM self etching primer for aluminum

I use Dupont VariPrime. It is very easy to apply, but your metal needs tobe clean. I have used it and Dupont Centuri Enamel on two airplanes and it has held up very good. You can use Nasons which is almost the same. I prefer the Dupont Brand.

There are lots of good two part epoxy primers for painting aluminum. I'll use a spray can of Zinc Chromate on a small part but when I paint an aluminum aircraft I always use the two part Dupont VariPrime. It only takes a light coating. I really like the Dupont products. The key to any paint job is the preperation work. Clean it, scotchbrite and a good primer are a must with aluminum.

Nason 491-17 acid etch primer 2 light coats but clean the aluminum first thourghly then prime and paint accordingly

I was thinking of taking the paint off of the sides and polishing the aluminum. Anybody knows the steps of doing such a job?
