Prop suggestion?

I currently have a 12' glass hull with 350 dd spinning a narrow 72 x 38 wood prop. My biggest problem is getting on plane in deep water. I was told that I needed to get a new prop in order to take this problem away. I'm thinking of getting a 72" wide prop. Do you guys think a wider prop will get me out of the hole quicker? I almost sank this weekend trying to get on plane, and I need to take care of the problem quick.

Plum is right I run a 13'6 cotton mouth direct drive 350 with polymere and ran a 72x32 wood blade sensinish and never had a problem getting it on a plane quickly, I have since put a q series on it and it snaps it up even quicker

How about a 72 x 30 wood prop? I want to get a composite prop, but I might have to wait a while. The little lady is redoing the kitchen and she might hang me if I pinch from that money to get a new composite prop right now. I got to keep her happy during the hunting offseason.

You may want to look at how the motor is pitched. my motor was pitched down prop end and may boat was real sluggish getting on plane. on dry ground i saw that the back of the boat was lifting 2 1/2" up. I raised the motor untill the boat only picked up about 1" on dry ground and now it pops up on plane. I thought that my prop was the problem untill i raised the motor.
good luck.

I have a 12'8"x7' glass dd350 and a narrow 70x34 and I have no problem getting on plane in deepwater. With 3 people in the boat it is a little slower to get up but it always does, with just me in it it jumps up pretty quick for what it is. By the way how many rpm's are you turning when you put it to the floor from a dead stop before it planes out? I second the motor pitch comment also.

First off what rpms are you turning.
My dd sb ran 72-32 stick one ran a paddle. the 400 turned a 72 34 paddle
you need to reach up to 2700 to 3000 rpms

Osceola, are you suggesting that maybe I need to lower the prop end of the motor?
I'm currently turning 2600 rpm's when punched to the ground, and I'm I think that maybe too little. My brother and I are going to look over the throttle stuff and carb to see if something could be wrong there.

See what you can do to get your rpm's up more. If you can get them up to 2800 or so when you punch it it will run alot better than it does now trying to get on plane. With your prop being narrow it won't develop the needed thrust till it spins up pretty high. When I punch mine it only takes a second or two and it is at 2800-2900then when the boat starts moving faster the rpm's go up to 3000-3100. If I just mashed the gas enough to turn 2600 it would be way way slower to get on plane, trust me those extra 200 or so rpm's make a difference with a narrow prop.

No don't lower the prop end of the motor.
What i am saying is if the prop end of your motor is to low that pushes the bow of your boat down because the prop is lifting the back end of your boat.
MY baot was sluggish getting on plane so i added more pitch to my prop and raised the motor 1/4" at a time you don't want to make big adjustments and only make one at a time so you can tell if it is working.
I had my boat on dry ground and had someone else drive the boat so i could see just what was going on. That was when i saw the back of my boat raise up 2 1/2" at full throdle. Remember as the rear of your boat raises the front is pushed down. You want a slight downward pitch to the back of your motor this helps on dry ground.
as the prop spins up the motor will seek level.
set you boat level (on the trailer) and level your engine that is a good starting piont.
Then do the dry ground test that i did just to see how much rise the back has and adjust from there.
Now as i said before by boat pops wright up of plane.
Just some thoughts and what worked for me.

I run a fairly large (16x7.5) alum hul (350 dd)l and have no problem getting up and going no matter where I am. Sounds like something ain't right for sure.

If you are looking for a paddle prop let me know, I just bought a new composite prop today and would sell my 70 inch paddle.....

make a trim tab for your boat! You can set it up with a shaft and sping to push up if you hit bottom. A trim tab on the back of your boat acts like a sponson and plains it out ion deep water with ease. This is just another sugestion to look at. If you have the money I would just buy a single electric trim tab.

a tab would add drag and doesnt do much help as experience tells me. since there is no mention here of porpoising, i suggest we may set the trim tab aside first.

since only have a 12 foot hull, i think you must set your engine level with the hull as a starting point and cure whatever occurs later.

then this issue that you only turn 2600 rpm is a significant factor. your prop is holding back your engine to producing less power. aim up to 3000 to 3200.

what do you have with that 350, 2 or 4 barrel? is it in good condition?

that 350 can take a 72 x 38 prop, a wider prop at 72 x 30 would be better BUT if i would have it for my self, a 70 x 30 or 70 x 32 very wide prop at 3000 rpm will kick it out of the hole and a lot quieter too!

I'm going to start tinkering with things slowly. This is my first airboat, so alot of learning during the process. If it wasn't for you guys and this sight, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Webfoot, I sent you a pm.
