Prop to Cage Clearance

What is the normal clearance from prop to cage? I believe part of my prop problem Sat night other than the tree limb was that I only had about 3/4" to 1" clearance on each side and about 4" at the top. I'm in the process of building a new cage and would like to have a little "crumple room". I'm thinking 4" would be good.

I would try to run 4" if possible. My current boat has 4 1/2" side clearance and the new boat has 7". My dads boat is a little close for my comfort at 2 1/2", but it was set up for a 68" prop and has a 70" signature on it now. I have seen 2 Powershifts ruined by the cage getting pushed into the blades by grass rakes, one only had 3 hours on it!

Adds alittle weight but worth the cost in my opinion. Look at expanded metal to surround the outer portion of the cage, just a strip about 9 to 12 inches wide stops any branches going through.
