Propeller Selection for a Teledyne 4A032-4 Engine

-Amphiboman-

Well-known member
Here are the specs for the engine once modified:

- 20-25, possibly more HP
- Approx 5000 RPM Max (Propless), around 2500 RPM with a prop
- Clockwise Rotation
- 32 CI, Approx 525 CC

I am curious as to what would be the correct propeller match for this application. I would like a 3-blade pusher. I do not know where to begin with the propeller selection. The above information is all I currently have to offer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you certain that that engine is rated at 5000 rpm? That seems high to me ...... I was thinking something more like 3600 rpm
for a maximum.

You could call Arrowprop in Meeker, OK (http://www.arrowprop.com ) and talk with them. They have a lot of experience with low horsepower
applications and have probably built one for that engine.

Well, in it's "U.S. Military" configuration, the engine is rated at 6 HP @ 3600 RPM... That is with the restrictor plate and governor installed. Once removed/bypassed the engine pushes past 20 HP at 4500+ RPMs. I will verify all this once I install a Tiny Tach.

OK, I just did a search and Yahoo Groups has a group under 'military surplus engines' that shows your Teledyne. There will likely be others.

Very cool. I like that a lot. He has his propped to 2800 rpm. You use your propeller as your rev limiter and rely on torque to turn it.
If it were mine I'd like for the engine to be able to turn a little closer to it's power peak ..... say 3200 ...... but what he has is working for him.

In my opinion that engine wouldn't live long at 5000 rpm. Given the choice, I'd go for longevity every time.

3,600 RPM is all you want to turn the 4A032
They're a tough little motor, but the aluminum, bearingless rods will only take so much before KA-FRICKI'N-BOOM!
Consensus says the engine will make ~18hp with a reduction ~27hp.
There is a big brother to these engines: 4A084. As issued they are heavy, but like a GPU when "stripped down" a lot of weight is shed.

Got some mixed info on this engine... Received the engine this last Friday and tore it down to necessary components for aircraft use. Bored the carburetor to 5/8" and removed the governor and installed a cover plate. I also found an individual who has 40 of these engines and some of the larger models and is a wealth of knowledge on the "Surplus Engine" subject. He advised me that prop-less in this configuration, the engine will top out at approximately 3600 RPM and with a properly pitched prop should be turning near 3200 or slightly less (any more RPMs would shorten the life of the engine). Progress is moving ahead nicely on the project... bought a couple mufflers today at the outrageous price of $4.45 each  ... have to configure them to the current straight-pipe setup. As it sits now, the little engine sounds like a cross between a beat-up Craftsman riding mower with rusted out mufflers and a Harley Davidson.

How much is he asking for these engines? Would shipping be prohibitive?

I got an Idea that needs a test engine.

Scotty

Those engines are his personal collection... he modifies, tests and uses the engines in various experimental craft - don't think they're for sale.

Ebay: It's where I got mine... $295 + freight... It was in a sealed U.S. Army Crate with preserving oil and all... Also, it still has the price paid by the military on a barcode sticker: A whopping $3200.00.

I would try the 2 blade IVO 60 inch. The 3 blade is excellent on the 35 HP. It is
adjustable so you can get the RPM's right. If it's too much prop, you can cut the
blades to a shorter length.
Hey Amphiboman, Check out the new MiniMini hull. might be perfect for that engine. :) Thanks, Chuck

FP, I think (for what I know) that those aluminum rods are the limiter too. If one of these had forged steel rods it would make a huge difference.
It's a very attractive place to play because there isn't a lot of money at stake. I just ordered two.

And I work accross the street from DRMO on Ft. Drum, which doesn't mean a lot since they never have anyting anymore.

Our shop used to rebuild those engines under the National Maintence Program , but they've been obsolete for a decade or more, once in a while a generator or mobil lube trailer comes in with one.

Well, lets see were do I start I gotta be quick cause' I am in Iraq and only got a few on the net so here it is... I built an airboat w/ a032 I used a GSE prop 44 inch and found that 14 to 15 degrees runs the best do not know the rpms but boat would not plane but, sounded awsome like a real boat I built open exhaust and did not but here if you put a bigger carb you can get about 10 max hp remember the engine are built to run with the cheapest wettest dirtiest gas and also run in any condition. so the compression is real low. I have been in the army 11 years and have used these generators in the feild as long ago as 2 years and in my opinion they run better in my shop than they did on a m577. so good luck .. and with people flying these things a glider maybe anything that needs power they are out of their minds. although I didn't build a plane I don't think my boat is to far off from the same weight with me on it or lighter Just my opinion PS don't try to write me back cause I only get on here twice a week and it is to talk to my wife ....BUBBA

How about using one for a 1/8 scale R.C. airboat?
Be about the right size for an eight year old......what! They may dirt bikes, ATV's and snowmobiles for little kids, besides since when diod you stop living vicariously thru your kids. :P
