question on new motor

I just got my motor running today and my headers turned bright red will breaking in my cam, almost right away. I set the timing to 8 degrees at around 1800 rpms during this procedure. It ran for about 15 min then the temp started rising so i shut it off. I did not have a prop on it just 2 electric fans and a power cat fan on the radiator. Can anyone help me on why it got so hot.

Your timing is retarded. Not knowing what you are dealing with your timing should be around 10 at idle and then mechanical advance will start to add to it . Total timing should be around 32 at 3000. You are getting incomplete burn and raw fuel is burning in the pipes. Good luck  .
