Quiet propeller article

Jim,

Good article!

So we slow prop speed, fatten the blade, discard the counter rotator idea and talk to the Germans?

Good catch Jim.
That article was very good reading. Although we are not flying airplanes, there is plenty of good information there for us to draw on. Much of that article gives hard facts on what works, and what doesnt. Articles should help us make the right first moves towards noise reduction.

The one statement about ultra-light aircraft engine sound emmissions hits home pretty hard. Looks like not buying mufflers, and blaming the prop for all of our noise problems won't hold up.

Got some mufflers on the way, and if everyone can just make their boats half as quiet as they are now, well that would be huge step in the right direction. It really wouldnt cost that much either.

The author summarized by recommending reduced take-off power settings as being a way to reduce noise impacts to the public.

Seems like they are looking for change in the way they operate as a huge first step. Something we should all consider just before we hit the starter button.

basket,

The counter rotators have been proven to be quiet in airboats, so the article contradicted that. Even the experts don't agree on everything. I was not aware of the airplane noise problem in Europe.

cowboy,

The most significant part of the article for me was the discussion of how the tip vortex can be disrupted to reduce noise.

It's not the boats themselves that people are objecting to, it's the noise they produce. If we significantly reduce the noise, they don't have so much to complain about and they might go back to their martinis and golf.
