About the W670:

From the Rhinebeck website:

Country: Detroit, Michigan,
USA
Year: 1934
Horsepower: 210-240
R.P.M.: 2200
Weight: 415
Displacement: 668 cu. in.
Configuration: 7 cylinder radial, air cooled
Used in: Stearman PT-17, Waco UPF-7, N3N

Originating in the mid-thirties, the W-670 was updated through the Second World War and was widely used in primary training aircraft of the U.S. military. In the post-war years many were used in crop-dusters. A slightly different version of the W-670 was developed for use in tanks.

Found this on the internet too.....

What a piece of history. The crop dusters they were used on post-war were on Stearman based airplanes and they didn't have much payload, but they'd go to work every morning like clock work. Reliable as a rock. olf

The article mentions their use in tanks. They were an effort to find a suitable powerplant for our tanks when they were in the N. African desert during the period when Patton was chasing Rommel during WWII.

Water for cooling was a premium commodity (almost as important as ammunition), but they were under powered for that kind of service and their failure rate was high only because of the heat. They were down inside a steel tank chassis, sitting in desert sun, so they were probably operating at near exhaust temperature part of the time. olf

We still make about 20 props a year for these engines on Stearman, Fairchild, and Waco airplanes.

There were over 10,000 Stearmans built during the 30's and 40's

Here's an intersting link of one of the companies that does Stearman restorations.

I've often thought that I'd like to restore one of the old Stearman dusters just for airshows.
You could fill the hopper with rice flour which makes a nice fog that looks just like chemical, and then make a low pass right at the crowd with the pump on. It would be fun to see the reaction. :).

The FAA people would probably fall off their perches, but I think it would be a blast.

Here is the overhaul Jim you right it is astronomical.

Continental W670-6A/6N

Overhauled with choice of steel or chrome cylinders, new master rod assembly, new cam, new FAA/PMA ROLLER MAIN BEARINGS, MAGS, SHIELDED HARNESS, CARBURETOR, AND NEW FAA/PMA PISTONS. Test run 4 hours.

Exchange or overhaul - $19,500.00
Outright - $22,500.00
Exchange engine must have like accessories and servicable crankcase,

If you are having a stearman restored and it is going to be worth 100k, then I guess that is ok.
