RAN THE BOAT AGAIN TODAY

Well-known member
We set my prop at the #3 setting and went to the river.(two blades are at #3 and two blades are at 3 1/2 ) My deeep water cruise spreed was 35mph @ 3000rpm. My skinny water cruise was 26-2700rpm at 30-35mph. The boat had half a tank of fuel and two guys. The motor mounts worked great and my temp never went above 180 degrees. Once again I fouled a plug #8 and the tach would jump around when you got above 4000rpm. So my top RPM is between 4500-4800rpm . I do not know what is going on with this fouling issue because all the other plugs looked good except #7 looked carboned up. Can your magnetic pick up cause your ignition to do this? At this point I am thinking about changing the module, cap, rotor, plugs, coil, pick up and wires. The Tech is brand new so I know that is not the problem. The boat ran dry ground with ease and I never needed to go over 4K to break loose on anything. I need help finding this grimlen guys.

Module??

Bushings wore out in housing where distributor shaft rides?

With a timing light and new plugs in #7 & #8 prove to yourself whether or not you are loosing fire.

Te distributer is an Accel 71000. Once I changed #8 the motor ran clean again. The plugs are gapped at .045.

Process of elimination.

#1-- Properly tuned idle circuitry. Rich idle circuit is a plug killer. :!: :!:
#2-- Good timing light to check if you are loosing fire.
#3-- Burn line near equal on all plugs
#4-- IF all else fails. Compression test.

The Idle circut is fat for sure. I will adress this first and check with a timing light after that.

THANK YOU!!!!

I found my problem today. The 71000 Accel distributer is flawed. The bottom plate that the pick up and the module bolts to works loose over time and alows everything to move. I called accel and they informed me of the problem and sure enough that was the deal. So now I nee to figure out if I want to try another 71000 distrubter or run a diffrent system. So can I get some feed back of what system you guys think will fill my void.

Cant you titen the allen screws on the side ! Same deal but fix it !

Accel told me that the bottom was held with some kind of pressed in pins and if they where installed to deep when assembled it cause the platform to wiggle over time. They said a real good machine shop might be able to fix it or I could send it in for warrenty repair if it was less then a year old and had the receipt. This is why the quit making the 71000 series and now make the 52000 model. I do not know if the 52000 has the same curve as the one I now have. The way mine is set up I am at full advance by 2200rpm.

crow i would check with potter and see what he recommends. msd is the best in my book. got one in a mud truckthats 10 yrs old, all i do is change gear when refreshing motor which has been 3-4 times in a 10 yr period. just tried a dui and not real pleased. my $.02

I RUN MINE FIX NOTHING IN THERE BUT THE PICKUP AND THE PLATE IS SCREW IN THERE ! I RUN A MSD TIMING BOX WITH 6 A MSD BOX ! RETARDS 20 DEGREES UNDER A 1000 AND ALL IN BY 3000 !WORKS REALLY WELL !

You lost me? What distributer do you run? I changed everything in my distributer today including the cap and rotor, I also tried 3 diffrent coils. Talked with Potter 2 diffrent times and when I called Accel they told me what was causing my problem. They said the plate is moving and it is causing my pick-up gap to open and close which is cutting the ignition in and out. Sure enough when I checked it out everything could move around.

SAME AS YOURS WITH NO GUTS ONLY PICKUP ! IT WAS LOSE LIKE YOURS SCREW THE PLATE DOWN ! DONT MOVE NO MORE! 7100

I will check it out closer tomorrow.

Crow found out that's why that they dis-continued the 71000 series. The 52000 is a stock look alike with a big cap. (UGLY) so we'll be fixing his (actually sending another and trading for less down time.
