Rebuild Top End or Not ?

wet r dry

Member
I have a I0 470-v rated 260hp @ 2600 rpm...
My question is is a top end rebuild worth it or should i have a complete rebuild done.
I have lower compression on the middle cylinders and more than normal blow by.
any suggestions.

Rebuilding the top end should take care of the compression & the blow by problems, if that is the only problems you have.

I would do a cylinder leakage test. That will tell you if the problems are in the top end or not. It's no fun to tear it down, put it back together and find out you still have the same problem.
If you need more information on how to do this or any other help just ask

A cylinder leakage test is used to tell if you have bad valves, requiring top end overhaul or bad rings. You need a special tool you might want to find someone near by that has one to borrow or just let a mechanic do it. It is done by bringing the piston up to TDC on the compression stroke and feeding compressed air into the cylinder. If air leaks out the intake you have a bad intake valve, same with the exhaust. If air pours out the breather then the rings are allowing compression past them. With the gauge for the test it will tell you a percent of leakage. Then you can check the spec's to see where you rate. If there is any leakage from the valves that is bad but there will always be some leakage arround the rings. Good luck.
