Anyone recognize Carters fuel pump. I suspect the one I have is bad. The tag on it was painted. I can read Carters but no numbers. Can any of you gurus guide me on a model number. Running a 496 car motor.20221029_130412.jpg

LOL, I was so close to posting a similar question last week, but I was just trying to figure out the make. Finally got a lucky google hit with a picture that looked similar to the old rust bucket.

the ????52-875 was all I had to google. I got one of these.

So I got a chance to get familiar with the range of options they offer. Here's the deal, they have a pretty big range of options, internally regulated or not, various fitting sizes and flow ratings. They all look the same.

Got the 496 part, what are you feeding? Carb? Pressure regulator or straight to carb? Make & size? Direct drive or geared? What size fuel hose do you presently have on the input and output? What size pipe fittings input and output?

In my case it is a boost pump feeding a mechanical injection pump. I opted for max pressure with no internal regulator, it's just for priming and start up. Chances are you want an internally regulated setup.

Their online catalog sucks for finding based on specs vs. vehicle application. Now you gonna make me find that weblink again 🤬 :poop:

I scratched off some paint on the label. 152 875 are the numbers. Looks as if you have the same numbers. I have no carb, injectors. The fuel lines look .5 Inch but will have to measure tomorrow. As it is configured now, the fuel line from the tank goes to a clear filter. From there it goes to this pump. From that pump up to a silver canister that has power to it. That canister looks to be bigger than a tall boy veer can. From there the fuel line goes up under the engine cover.

Ok, good info. the 152-875 seems to be pretty generic for this style of carter pump. Would be good to know the details on the tall boy beer can, I'm gonna assume that's your high pressure pump, or possibly a filter. Either way, you are looking for a boost pump for a fuel injected setup with it's own pressure regulator on an engine making 500 Hp or so??

You can use just about anything that makes 50 GPH or more at anything above 1 PSI, regulated or not. Ideally you want an unregulated pump that put's out a good bit of flow and makes at least 6 psi. All of my stuff is 3/8" hose feed to the mechanical HP pump, 1/4" hose after, all feeding a 300 Hp aviation engine. The 1/4" pipe ports matched my stuff.

P4389 Carter.jpg

Your ports look like 1/4" NPT with 3/8" hose barbs. I believe the same pump will work for you:
P4389 = 1/4" NPT ports, 6-8 PSI, 72 GPH, Unregulated, Marine Rated

If you have 3/8" NPT ports, then this is the one I find:
P4601HP = 3/8" NPT ports, 6-9.5 PSI, 50 GPH, Unregulated, NOT Marine rated

As it is configured now, the fuel line from the tank goes to a clear filter. From there it goes to this pump.

If this is the only filter in your system, that explains this failure, and probably the next (note, my old pump still worked fine, I just figured one day it would be leaking everywhere..., It's now in my on-board spares).

Ditch the clear dirt filter, it is not right for the application. Put a spin on Racor or other water separating filter rated 10 microns, biggest you can fit, before the new Carter Pump. Then make sure the tall boy is another filter, or at least there is a finer injection filter downstream (under the cowl) somewhere.
