Remote Oil Filter

Bigfun

Just bought a a boat with a AV 0540 and I would like to put a remote oil filter on it. Any recommendations on filter assembly or filter type? Is this a good idea?

Thanks

Spin on oil filters are a good idea. These type filters catch the smaler partical and can be changed every 50 hours instead of at 25 hrs with the screen filter. This spin on filter housing replaces the current screen housing on your motor now. This screen is found between the two mags. If you have the room, the 90 degree type filter housing makes a very nice instalation, and keeps the mess down at an oil change. You can use the A/C type filters : Champion 48110-1, Tempest, Kely or the old Ford FL-1 found at any auto parts store.

I have an IO 360, I put a remote filter in the oil cooler line. Was the easiest to get to and didnt have to buy a new housing for the block.

Did you take the orignal strainer out or leave it in? I want to do that myself.
Thanks

would you put the filter up stream, or down stream from
the oil cooler ? or do you think it would make any measurable
difference?

I doubt if it matters. If you put it on the outlet side of the engine it pressurizes the filter before the cooler, might be easier long term on the cooler. Thats all I can think of.

A filter ahead of the cooler is best. What you are trying to filter out will drop out easer and if you have a failure cooler is less likely to become contaminated. My thoughts.

When you put the filter in the oil cooler line it does not see all the oil. THe oil flow is split between the cooler & direct to the engine by the vernatherm( temperature controller). The vernathurm block flows to the engine bypassing the oil cooler. It will only diver the all the oil to the cooler if the temp gets above 180 to 190 degrees F.
Airwolf (sold by Aircraft Spruce - $495) makes a adapter to replace the screen or the spin-on oil filter so you can mount the oil filter remote. You can go to the Speed shop & get a fire wall mount oil filter housing & use an Wix filter. They are one of the few filters that will with stand the pressure @ start up 400 psi. If you are interested let me know & I can give you the full details.

As big as these filters are I dont know that I need to filter all the oil all the time. As long as it flows some of the oil through it, it should be filtering and passing it back to the engine. I guess I'll go look at my oil and see how bad it really is compared to the last new oil I put in. I have a PPM (parts per million) detector Ill check and see how bad this issue really is. I could be on the wrong thrack. Anyone else think it needs to filter all the oil all the time?
