Ok everybody you gotta go look at ricks pics of easter weekend camping trip. First off I must commend him and whomever else was involved in helping teach the youngsters that food doesn't only come from a store ... NICE JOB RICK and CREW.

Secondly I really feel that since STAN and I shared our FAMOUS FROG LEGS and batter secret, and not to forget the HUSHPUPPIES .. the very least we should expect next run is some TURTLE FRIED by rick .. no don't worry RICK, STAN and I will have a fryer on hand to let you use. I noticed the number of turtles in the barrel so claiming not to have any will not be an acceptable excuse in the future. Obviously if they were all eaten you certainly know where to go get some more or whom to get some from.

LOL you cooked yourself with those pics BUDDY mmmmm good i love cooter especially when someone else is cleaning and cooking.

Looks like an awesome time going on there :D A lot of good eating too it appears. 8) Nothing like having fun with the family! Those youngins will remember that trip for ever I bet! Rick, you got to show me some of those fishing spots LOL! Good job man!

I dont think I have ever had softshell turtle but I know my Great Grandma and my Grandma used to cook Gopher turtle stew that would make your tongue want to slap your brains out. It was amazing. Stinks they are endangered cause they sure taste good. I hope they make a big comeback.

Faron, they tell me gopher turtle is second only to manatee on the Top 10 list ..... .

During the Great Depression, gopher turtles were nicknamed "Hoover chickens". Hoover was the President at the time, and they got the name because a lot of folks couldn't afford a chicken for the pot, but they could usually find an ol' gopher tortoise crawling around somewhere.

Sounds good to me cntry....of course turtle season closes for a couple of months come May 1st so it might have to be a late summer/early fall ride.

Sounds like you might know a little bit about how much work goes into a good turtle fry from start to finish. We've had turtle fry's every summer for as long as I can remember.

I'll start saving a few ziploc's marked "Monthly Run".

GOPHER TORTISE aka LOW HUNG STEER .. cook up with some rice and most folks swear it is beef tips and rice you are feedin them.

yep I have had a fry or two before for sure. I always love the folks who break out the ax to get them outta the hull LOL I saw that one lady in the pics knew what to do just fine .. all you need is a good sharp knife and the hull makes a handy bowl to hold thing for you.

But RICK bring em cleaned please LOL.

You can also crockpot turtle with pintos or great northern beans (I use both) .... a little mild onion, salt to taste. A pan of cornbread when it's done? Man, you can't sit still and eat it.

No problem Raizincane. I took three when ya'll were coming around that bend we were camping on. As soon as I get home this evening I'll send them your way.

Guess you noticed we're using one of them for the pic at the top of the site also. I did do a little bit of image work on that one though.

Thanks,
Rick
