Rudder talk

Ok from other threads there is interest on single -vs- dual or tripple or even quad rudders.

I have seen as many as 5 on big wide multiengined seismic drill boats.

So is there a good, better best for sport/pleasure boats, and why?

I am nearing completion of my little boat and an seriously thinking of backing up just a bit and putting a big wide thick Glades style single rudder on it.

My kid had a single rudder boat long ago and it worked just fine for him. Sadly though, I never ran that boat. When he saw it he was in it like a jackrabbit and it would have teken illegal force and probably sent me to jail to get him out of it. LOL
It sure did perform right along with my big Buick powered dual rudder boat though. In some locations there may not be much advantage of any over the others, but in places like the Glades I suspect there may have been a reason why the big single rudders.

How about some opinions from folks who have run both?

Scotty

I hear the one big single PB style rudder will give it more push when your shakin um trying to get out of something. Never ran one though. This is a good question though and I cant wait to here some experienced answers.

ALOT OF FOLKS SEEM TO HAVE THE WRONG IDEAS ABOUT THE SINGLE RUDDER AND WHY THEY WERE BUILT THAT WAY AND WHERE THEY WERE BUILT FOR.. THE SINGLE AIRFOIL WAS BUILT BY THE SAME FOLKS WHO BUILT THE PALMBEACH HULLS , STOSSEL , SIMPSON ,KLINE , HURST , BERRECKA AND A HAND FULL OF OTHER LOCALS FROM PALMBEACH. THEY WERE NOT BUILT FOR THE GLADES AND WERE NOT REALLY POPULAR WITH THE LOCALS IN THE GLADES THEY MOSTLY PERFERED THE FLAT STOP-SIGN RUDDERS , NOW DONT GET ME WRONG THE BOYS WHO BUILT THESE HULLS AND RUDDERS IN PALMBEACH AND THE FOLKS WHO OWNED THEM RUN THE GLADES BUT THE PALMBEACH HULL AND SINGLE AIRFOIL WERE AND ARE BUILT FOR ONE REASON " DRY GROUND RUNNIN AND HUNTIN " THERE BUILT WITH A 4 FT BOTTOM ROLLED LIKE A BARREL TO KEEP THE LEAST FLAT SURFACE OFF THE GROUND AS POSSIBLE AND NO OTHER HULL COMES CLOSE TO COMPETEING WITH THEM FOR STRAIGHT OUT HUNTIN BOATS , SAME WITH THE BIG SINGLE AIR-FOIL ITS MAIN JOB IS TO BREAK THE BOAT LOOSE ON DRY NO MATTER HOW BAD OF WOODS YOUR RUNNIN "AND THEY WILL " THATS THE HIGH POINTS AND THATS WERE THEY SHINE !! ON THE GROUND

NOW FOR THERE BAD POINTS , WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT A ROUND BARELL IN THE DEEP WATER AND LEAN TO ONE SIDE ? ITS GONNA ROLL RIGHT OVER , THAT'S WHY THE GLADES HULL BUILDERS RUN A FLATER A$$ END AND USED A MORE 45 DEGREE TRANSOM AND SIDES INSTEAD OF THE ROUND SIDES SO THEY WERE MORE BOY'INT IN THE DEEP WATER AND PLANE FASTER AND EASIER...

SO IT COMES DOWN TO PICK YOUR POISON DRY RUNNING BEAST SO-SO IN THE DEEP WATER OR GREAT IN THE WATER AND GRASS WITH A LOT MORE FLAT TO SLOW YOU DOWN ON THE DRY.... DOUBLE RUDDERS HANDLE GREAT ON PLANE SO -SO FOR BREAKIN YOU LOOSE ON DRY , BIG SINGLE RUDDER WILL SHAKE YA LOOSE EVERYTIME ON DRY AND HANDLE WELL ON PLANE.

THE BEST YOU CAN DO IS SEARCH FOR THAT HAPPY MEDIUM LIKE THE REST OF US..

Scotty ,
here is my two cents worth on the matter. the duals & triples are more a water rudder for the ride boats or race boats the old Palm beach single rudders are a work horse to flip that boat around in the thick stuff but they to take a little more work on open water and windy day admittedly .
At this point someone would stand a better chance to convince me my X wife is a good person long before they could convince me that a double rudder is better then the old WPB single rudder

Nice Post'in Dusty.
Donny Tuten told me he's seen some single rudder boats that had so much throw, they would almost get the side of the rudder flat square with the prop.

In open water it would actually back up slowly while idling. That is if the rudder was thrown all the way to the side as far as it would go.

No real significance here, or tangible benefit... I just found that interesting when he told me that little story.

always heard those single foils would rock a boat out of a sticky situation.. I have seen a guy lift his boat on one side of the ground leaving the hill with a single rudder.

hey guys, brewster layed it out pretty good.ive had stossel hulls with doubles on my current boat, and years ago i had the same hull with a single airfoil rudder that boyd stossel built.to me personally, there is no comparrison on dry ground.the airfoil will really shake you loose when your hung up.like i said ill be changing in the near future.

 sorry Swampcritter Can't help
:?
I always thought you had a single router just to declare that you were A Palm Beach County boy.

Never had anything but a single airfoil router and don't plan to change my ways.

I know some boys that went to double rotors just because they were not proud of where they came from PBC.

Jrlyes you will have to come back home get one see you in town?

Well Dusty, Cowboy and others may have let the cat out of the bag and I could not have explained it better good job
:D

Id like to use a single rudder, and I may. It is quickest to get my boat in the water with duals that are on it. I may do that in fact and if I dont like it, at least I can run it some while I look for a deal on a big single.

This thread needs to perpetuate though, lots of good history here.

Anybody got some close up mount images for the big singles. Like to see some details. Are folks still using the old dog leg and the long side pieces on the rudder or are they adapted to teleflex now as well?

Sure would like to see some closeups.

Scotty
