S&W 460 vs 500

I'd go with the 460. You can shoot 45LC, 454 casull, and more choices on 460 ammo than 500. I looked at the ballistics compairing the two just the other day---as I remember the 460 was more desirable to me than the 500. I even priced the 460 ammo a while back---about $30 for federal and $40 for cor-bon (if I remember correctly). Saw the 460's for $950 at bargain barn and a little over $800 at http://www.gunbroker.com I made bb an offer on the 5" they had; but, they wouldn't budge. I'm sure glad---all I need is another gun. I'd have got it anyway except I already have a 50AE desert eagle.

I hadn't heard about either of these. Are they built on the 29 (N) frame? Certainly sounds interesting. I been covetting a 454 Cassul but haven't heard of one for sale for years now.

Might be a decent option, I love the S&W action, it can be made silky smooth.

Scotty

Not N frames. I think they are called XVR. I've heard them refered to as V and X frames. Check them out---they are really neat. Magnum Research also has a 460---check out their web site and videos of the chicks firing each cal. of the BFR and then smiling at the camera. I'm too stupid to put the link and video on here; but, it's worth checking out.

I still want a 500 Linebaugh on a Blackhawk frame with a Bisley grip frame.

He used to make a 500 Linebaugh Maximum. These were built on the old 357 Maximum Blackhawk frames. Those are pretty much non-existent nowadays. Now THAT was a powerful handgun!

What does everyone think about the 480 Ruger? I havent' heard much talk about it yet.

one of my co-worker owns both and says the ballistics on the 460 is WAY better. he said that it shoots flat to like 250 yards or something like that.

Wow! I checked the S&W site and the 460 looks awesome. What brass is this thing built up on? Is it an all new case or reusing a blown out .45 LC or what?

Are reloading dies available yet? Reloading data?

This looks awful good to me.

Scotty

yes Scotty, RCBS offers dies for both, and I'm sure Redding probably does too, maybe others

I am too, scotty, I have been watching them and dreamin waiting on the price to come down.
S&W guarrantees that it will stop a mature bull elephant at 200 yards? 460 has as much velocity at 200 yards as a 7mag at the muzzle? if these are true, it must be sumthin!!!!

The ballistics charts at Cor Bon says the 460 S&W has
1750 ft.pr. sec. and 2041 ft.lbs. energy at muzzle
7 mm, mag has 2925 ft.pr.sec. and 3040 energy.
The 7mm. mag @ 500 yds. has 2085ft.pr.sec. and
1545 ft.lbs. energy. as for the 460, could not find
any specs. beyond muzzle. For a pistol round the
460 looks like a bad azz, but at 200 plus yds. it
cant hang with a rifle.

460 looking better the Hornady ballistics charts show it
at 2200 ft.pr.sec. and 2149 ft.lbs. energy @ muzzle
and 1715ft.pr.sec. and 1305 ft.lbs. energy @ 100 yds.
that 7mm. mag @100yds. runs out @ 2745 ft.pr.sec.
and 2761 ft.lbs. energy.
