Headed out SLI this moring with my nephew and another young man from work. I tried to get my oldest to go, but he got a new video game yesterday and had class tonight, so he baled. His loss . Bugged up a couple dozen greenies and headed north looking for sails or cobia. Quite a ways north we see a sail greyhounding, we pull up in just a couple of minutes we (nephew) are hooked up. A buddy is nearby, but won't bite. After a few jumps and several minutes on the line, the hook pulls. No more action, continue heading north. Come across an incredible amount of bait being blasted by spinner sharks and what at first we thought we more sails. My nephew gets the first bait in the water is immediately hooked, the fish is coming to the top fast and gets great air - an 80ish pound tarpon. From the next two or so hours it's game on. Several tarpon hooked and landed and many more lost, as well as some acrobatic spinners - none of them landed. Bite cools and we head farther offshore. We come to stop in about 75 feet of water and are covered up in short snakes. I hook one on my 8 pound spin with a yozurri crystal minnow. Too short, so he was realeased. Bite cools again and we head back toward large bait pod inshore, nothing happening this time and head to dock. I was without a doubt my best day for tarpon, and we weren't even trying for them.
