sbc oil capacity

How many quarts of oil does a stock sbc 350 take. Odd question I know but I bought my boat from a old man about six monts ago and he could not remeber what size oil pan was on the boat. So I looked at a friend of mine's motor and it looks the same. Did some crude measurments and seems identical. He runs 5 1/2 quarts. I put six in and the dip stick does not show full. Now I think that the dip stick is not the right one or the tube is too long etc... :? SO what is the stock capacity?

Pretty tough question, the big thing is you don't want the crank whipping up the oil and costing you HP> Stock pan would be around 4 to 4.5 quarts but I dont know what you have on there. If theres an oil cooler and line you need to add a little more. Just dont have the level touching the rotating assembly. More is not better always!

Curdog, it sounds to me like the dipstick is the wrong one for your engine. I use a Fram PH35 oil filter on my 350. That holds almost a whole quart all by itself, and then pour 4 more into the engine. It checks right on the full mark.

Good advise, and any follow-up I can offer. For the mostpart, based on my knowledge, ALL factory SBC pans either were rated at 4.5-5 qts or 5.5-6qts depending on whether the vehicle came with the long filter or the short one. Both filters interchange and ALWAYS use the long filter if possible AKA 5-6 qts depending on the pan u use. The truck pans as well as the Corvettes (these can be spotted by a sump that is ~1 1/2" longer) use the extra qt. (5.5/6.0)

P.S. Overfilling not only costs HP, it will actually kill oil pressure and quality. if the crank/reciprocating assembly "pick up" the oil in the sump, it will actually lower the oil level and aerate it (foam). Bad all the way around. So I suggest looking into it before you put much more time on it.

use the long filter, same price and more filter. We run oil strippers to peel oil away from the rotating assembly to create even more HP. Just sheet metal on the downside of the crank to peel oil spray. Not a big deal on DD I suspect but you don't want the crank churning through the oil. Airaition wil create not true oil pressure and can present problems.

I know you could blow seals with to much oil on Nissans 4 bangers (learned the hard way), but never hear the rest of this stuff posted. Amazing what I read and learn here.

OK - for you guys that know 350 CSB - that infamous zz4 crate motor what is it's capacity. What is the capacity of that thing stock from the factory.

I have a friend whose boat has that engine in it. His dipstick is always above the fill line - puts 6 quarts, including one in the filter. I have changed it and with 5 it is just a tad bit below full. He has always said they all ran 6 quarts, but knows about what I know about motors (VERY LITTLE).

Pat, make sure the valve covers are pretty close to level when you check it, and then believe the dipstick. In an automobile the front of an engine is usually just a little higher than the rear to accomodate for drivetrain angle, and the dipsticks are marked for that kind of an installation.

And I'm sure you know to always pre-fill the oil filter so that you get oil pressure right away on start up.
