SBC Timing Help

Some background:

I recently bought a 14x4 alumitech with a 406 sbc with around 500hp according to the seller. The engine runs great and pushes the boat where it needs to go. I had no problems starting hot or cold, and it did not diesel when shut off.

I started getting oil coming up the distributor shaft. I thought the distributor bushing was bad, so I replaced the distributor with another MSD distributor. Before pulling the old distributor out, I checked the timing and it showed 35* at idle. It was idling around 900rpms. The timing seemed high to me, but the plugs didn't show signs of detonation and the boat ran great.

I put the new distributor in and am having trouble getting it timed now. With the new distributor in roughly the same position as the old distributor, it's around 55*. When I turn it as far as the wires give me clearance to turn, it will come back down to around 35*, but the engine stalls out below 1000rpms.

I didn't adjust the carb idle mixture and I took the springs from the old distributor and put them in this one.

Anyone have any ideas?
