SFWMD Trades away Shady Oaks - the meeting & results

Daddy Dave

Well-known member
Kissimmee River Valley Sportsman's Association (KRVSA) spent $5,000 of club funds for legal representation in an attempt to find grounds to block the proposed trade of Shady Oaks property, including having legal representation at West Palm Beach yesterday. KRVSA President Danny Brantley, FAA Vice President Bob Hoover, KRVSA legal representation and Dave Markett spoke in opposition to the trade.

To no avail. The District had crafted a real estate deal with POMCOR, Inc. that accrued a net gain of millions of dollars in the District's favor based on their figures.

SFWMD traded away 2,400 acres of waterfront Lake Kissimmee high and dry ground with no conservation easement or deeded public access for about 4,700 acres of wetlands in Glades County that will serve as a stormwater treatment area (STA) and an 18 acre waterfront site in Martin County.

STAs allow non motorized public access including duck hunting (Newton Cook, Waterfowl Unlimited - Florida and Byron Maharey - Everglades Coordinating Council praised the deal) but do not allow any public motorized access (no airboats and / or swamp buggies).

The vote in favor of the staff recommended trade was unanimous and District Governors praised Ruth Clement, SFWMD lands division lawyer, for crafting such a phenomenal deal in favor of the long term goals of SFWMD.

In exchange, SFWMD orally agreed to cut out about 122 acres of the Shady Oaks property including the old marina site with existing launch ramp as a new public park with Polk County to be the park's manager. SFWMD officials promised separate motor vessel and airboat launch facilities, picnic areas and improved parking. SFWMD also promised another airboat launch site would be immediately developed on adjoining existing Florida Division of Forestry lands at Otter Slough with FDOF managing and maintaining that public access facility.

That's what is good about airboaters....they always fight for the big picture while other organizations only fight for self serving propositions without any consideration for other sportmen.

Mr. Brantley, Mr. Hoover, and Mr. Markett:

Thanks for sticking your necks out and standing up for us! Even though it didn't work out the way we would have liked, we appreciate all your efforts.

I'll second that Laura. (And Adam)

I have one unanswered question....

HOW HIGH are they planning to raise Lake Kissimmee? A foot or two? 5 feet? I have not seen this information. I know there is construction at the locks. Must have something to do with the raising?

And at least we got a county operated ramp out of the deal. Oh, yeah, That will be confiscated by the HOMOwner ASSociation once the million dollar homes go in.

Gentlemen, thanks for leading the fight. To find a silver lining, I can only say that I hope this has taught us to be more ready from an earlier date on the next one. Keep those eyes open. I'll be listening for your call to help!

matt.

BigDaddy,

This is why I keep my KRVSA membership current! Thank you all for your hard enduring work. At least the ramp

Guess I just don't get it.......There has been no mention in the press that I can find of this transaction.....Go Figure.

Mood, The new high water mark on the Kisimmee Chain is 54' - an increase from 52'5". Existing case law - KRVSA v. McNamarra establishes sovereign submerged lands at 52'5".

Ya'll aint gonna like this one for sure...

They did nothing wrong on the deal they didnt use restricted money to buy it so they could sell it no problem. They got the land they needed for free actually and very good profit to boot. We benefited if they ever open the ramps up they are talking of so we won also. Shady oaks was never airboat friendly before and maybe it will be now. I guess maybe after 4 or 5 years of studies and 10 or 15 designs and after another 6 restrictions on airboats are passed we probably can look for the opening of the ramps one at a time about 5 years apart. By then polk county will have a noise ordinance on the books and even jumbo size paddles on canoes will be banned on lake kiss. But such is life. My suggestion well just ride when you can where you can while you can because the time is coming folks when we will be stars of the old time news reels... remember when ???

Oh and by the way they will give you misinformation verbally so you go chasing the wrong track just like on this one they said conservation funds were used to buy it so we got all bent out of shape and spent all our time hollerin and pissin folks off needlesly while they put the finishing touches on this deal unobstructed by us. politicians you gotta love em hell we vote them back in every term if you don't like this kind of action don't re-elect anyone and get a new crop in there but that never happens they will all get re-elected and re-appointed and we will dwindle in numbers.

To me, and this is just my opinion, this was never about boat ramps. I could really care less about how airboat friendly or unfriendly any place around there is. I will put in somewhere that is better. However, there wasn't any development on a large scale before and now that is definitely more of a possiblity in the future. The land was the issue in my eyes.

But, hey maybe I'll win the lotto and buy me a nice big lot in the subdivision that will go there. My neighbors probably would only be there during the winter anyhow....should be nice and quiet.

Adam
