Slick Bottom=Roll It? Spray It?

KING

Active member
Just trying to find the best possible way to have slick bottom installed on my fiberglass hull. Have had many suggestions from friends, but need more info!! Roll it on myself vs. Have it sprayed on? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Just my opinion ..... do all of the prep work, tape it off well, roll it on, and be ready to work fast so you get an even application.
Two people is better than one.

If it's sprayed on, you can build it up it spots that wear down the quickest. If you roll it on you can't build it up like spray but it works good. I've rolled all mine on and never had any problems. Like Olf said, be ready to work quick!

I know sometimes I have heard of people who prefer to roll it on as they like the dimples they get vs. the finish of spraying. This was on a boat that raced though.

I burn't it all off the bottom of my boat again and I'm recoating it for the last time this week. I plan on rolling it this time. Next time it's a sheet of poly!

Thunder, you operate in a different universe from most of the rest of us ..... go for a sheet of Titanium this time.

I'm just happy to get on plane. When I race kayak's and manatee I win most of the time though. :?

IF YOU DECIDE TO ROLL IT ON USE A GOOD FOAM ROLLER! THE CHEAP COTTON ROLLERS SOAK UP TO MUCH SLICK BOTTOM, AS TO WHERE THE FOAM ROLLER WILL SPREAD IT MORE AND NOT BUILD UP IN THE ROLLER.

Well how long will a slick bottom last.
What would worrie me more is the roots and other stuf we run over.

So they put dimples on golf balls to create a boundry layer and have the ball fly further, (don't supose any of you golf?). I don't know? does the same effect happen in water? I kind of recall race boats having mirror finishes! :?

Have it sprayed. I just took my boat back to the dealer/builder. They took out the rigging, flipped it over, repaired my "poor judgement" spots , prepped and sprayed on a new coat. It looks great and slick. In and out in less than a week for $375.

I don't get a chance to golf much either but that would make it even more fun! I wonder if they would let me bring it on the course!

Edit: Was thinking the golfing comunity might be a little stuffy about airboats on the course!

Maybe the "Village people" would compromise;
No airboats dock at night if they would give the AB's just one of their courses one week a month.
This might even develope a new game.... airboat polo!!!

Airboat Polo ..... I like that, Wild. I like that a lot.

You could use a beach ball and bat it around with your grass rake ...... 8) .

Thanks for all the info guys!! :thumbright: I do actually play golf and understand the golf ball theory! I think I am gonna try to roll it on myself. One more question before I start:: Do I sand the bottom all the way to the fiberglass? Or just scuff it up to make it ruff and sticky??? I also need to know the best recommended brand to use. I have heard good things about FROG SPIT, OWL SNOT, STEELFLEX2000, and GROUD GREASE. Thanks for all the input! :king:

frog spit is one of the best and you can get it out of FT. Meade

I KNOW ON SK FLAT RACE BOATS ! THAT WE WOULD WAX SMOOTH THE BOTTOM SANDPAPER THE BOTTOM FOR MIRROR FINISH AND RIGHT ON THE BACK 6 INCHES WOULD ROUGH IT SO HAD DRAG FOR CONTROL OTHER WISE THE BOAT WOULDNT KNOW ITS IN WATER .WE USED TO RUN TAHO IN THE LATE 70S STOP DOING IT NOT ENOUGHT MONEY HERE OR BACK THEN! :D USED TO LOVE THAT !THE PROP ONLY THING THAT GOT WET ! GREAT TIME BACK THEN :D A FRIEND I WAS RAISED UP WITH HAD A BLOWN FLAT BOTTOM BOAT!

I gave up and got polymer. Slick bottom just didn't last long enough (two months at most).

Is this the same stuff used in truck beds? How much does it take for an average hull, and will it work on aluminum? Does it help gain speed in water or just running dry? Thanks Glenn

someone correct me if I am wrong, but my old boat had steel flex as the base.....then you did a scratch and put on frog spit etc over top of it.
I used a 6 inch putty knife to apply it and it went on nice and even..
