small powered boat

Hello. I posted on the mini forum about a boat that I was wanting to build. It seems like I need more power to do what I need it to do. I will need to carry about 700lbs. I am definitely interested in the airplane engines, but know nothing about them. i would assume that I would need at least 100 hp on a 12' hull. Tell me what you all think. I would appreciate some info and where I could get an engine and the types that I should be looking at. Thanks in advance.

thats a tall order, 700 lbs plus the weight of people? lycoming 0-540 or continentel 520, or a gpu, all these are around the 260 hp range, whays your spending limit?

Hey, i appreciate the reply. The total weight of 700lbs. includes people, dogs, and equipment. Two people at about 450lbs., 2 dogs at 150lbs, and our equipment. Will probably be a little less, but that is what I am looking at. I am wanting to build the boat as a project, so if I could find a good source for an engine, I'll spend what it takes to get it done. Of course, the cheaper the better. If anyone has suggestions on where to find an engine, let me know.

fish4rob,

I read your original post in mini's and now this one. I seems that you are seeking both cost efficiency, with specific needs but would prefer to build something your self.
As most feel, there is a sense of pride to do something your self, but in this case I think you might be best off finding a good deal on a 12'-13' boat with a 220GPU. You will be able to customize it to your own needs and like most used boats for sale they all can use some fixin up. You can take pride in all that work. You can find some good deals in this category of airboats. It will carry the load you need and have plenty of power to get you where you need to go. Sure a real aircraft will out perform (in most cases) but there is more cost invoved. Here is a short video link of my 13'7" aluminum with a 220GPU. I was not on it hard at all. Good luck finding all of your answers, have fun.

classified here have some the airboat trader has some and some individuals have some just depends on what you want. and what you need , are you running dry or just a 1" of water? are you looking for a 4 ,6 or 8 cyl ? etc...

if you go a 6cyl a gpu is a good place to start has the power and can be converted for more later. if you have the money you can get a true continental Ac motor or even a lycomng 0-470, 0-520 or a 220 gpu (pe-150) OR four bangers 0-300 or a 150 gpu (pe-90)

Ranger, apprediate the reply. I'm really just in it for the build.

Gold, appreciate the reply. I would not need to run dry. I won't say ever, but somewhere close. I saw som of the pe(90) for sell. I may look into those. Truthfully, 9 times out of 10 it will be just me and my dog. But, I've got a buddy that has good access to an area that he would need to be with me to get to. I'll keep looking at the airplane engines. Is there any benefit to going aircraft as opposed to auto?

how does that go .. oh ya CHICKS DIG THEM :D :D

you can change single cylinders on the boat with about auto engines you have to pull the whole thing and the ac is generally lighter
