Where I work they use LN2 (liquid Nitrogen) to check air flows in the cleanroom. Dry ice in water will also give off a smoke like clowd.

I have also see airboat builders use those hand held mosquito foggers to streamline air flow.

I made a mosquito fogger with a little Ultra Light Leaf Blower from Wally World. Cost around $50 maybe for the blower and a few copper bits & pieces from Ace Hardware. You can adjust how much smoke you want with the "T" valve on it. Let me see if anyone is up at home and Ill get ya a closeup picture of it. Simple to make.

Here it is, just add Diesel or maybe motor oil instead of Skeeter Fogg stuff.

Hope this helps, it sure makes a LOT of smoke. Look in my gallery for a larger picture.

Check some DJ & nightclub suppliers. I used to use one similar to this:
chauvetf800-t.gif

anf they have them NEW for $70

Fog juice (some kind of glycol) is $20 per gallon and lasts a LONG time!

You could attach an garden hose to the output of this (it does get warm but would probably not be an issue) then reduce it down to just a small little tube, tied to a stick, just like the pro wind tunnel guys use.

It should give you nice pencil line of fog.

Fat boy The way I checked my prop air flow was to use knitting yarn in 6" to 12" pieces and taped them all over the boat from bow to stern. I done one side of the boat and used around 200 pieces of yarn. Then I set up my video camera and my digital camera -- The things I found out real fast was to mark (with tape on the boat if front of the camera ) what RPM you are running. 1 = 1000rpm Then I run test at 1000--2000--3000RPM and between the two camers it was very interesting as to how the air flows.
You can do this on the trailer and then on the water --( using the zoom on the camera for the water shots.)
I think that yarn is not so easily distorted by other air movements so it give you a more positive reading.
Don't forget to test behind the prop as well... I found that the air around the outer edges of the cage behind the prop goes forward to the prop.

SEE JUST LIKE I TOLD THE FELLER YESTERDAY ! THIS IS WHY I HANG AROUND SMART GUYS LIKE YALL ! CAUSE I MAKE IT SO HARD ON ME IF I START THINKING ! ALL GREAT IDEAS ! I AM GOING TO TRY TO FIND MY BAD SPOTS AND TRY TO SHIELD THEM OR FIX THEM OR ROUND THEM OFF ! MY RAD THE BIG DEAL BUT I CAN FAN IT MOST ANY WHERE !AND THANKS RON I WILL DO THAT FIRST , TO FIND BAD SPOTS AND THEN I WILL DO THE NEXT STEP !I WOULD LIKE IT AS CLEAN AS I CAN GET IT ! THIS GAS WILL BE 400 GAL IN A FEW DAYS ! JUST WANT TO SAY NOT MY FAULT I TRIED !THANKS ALOT :D :D

Check with one of the fire alarm system installers around your area. It called just what you said, “smoke in a can. They have to use it to check the detectors on a large system to get certifications. If you think this will work and you have no luck finding some pm me and I will get you some and send it to you.

I have a skeeter fogger I got from home Depot that would work great for that... you can run ATF thru it instead of skeeter juice.

FB,
Not trying to hyjack this thread, but has anyone turned the rad flat (horizontal instead of vertical) under the motor with elec. fans blowing down? It could even work for us A/C guys. this would clean up the air flow and reduce the "whop-whop" sound.
just thinking out loud.

Cntry, Has it been done before? I'd like to see photos. Are there problems with weight on the rad tubes because of mounting it different?
Once again JTOL.

Swamp,
There are a couple of other advantages too. With the radiator laying on it's side, any debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) that are thrown up by the prop are less likely to damage or clog it, and by having thermostatic switches on the electric fan (s), the engine temperature will be more constant. It will warm up faster and may even run cooler at idle.

It would work just as well for an A/C oil cooler. You could even run a larger one ..... more oil capacity, and additional cooling when it's needed.

Horizontal radiators are used a lot in race cars to keep the frontal area low. Same idea in a way ..... managing airflow.

2 things--- 1st -- using ATF in a fogger can be dangerous because it is a petroleum product and you are heating it to the point it turns to smoke-- that it is heated to that high temp. it is a gas that is giving off toxic fumes and I am sure it is a lot worse than a good cigar.
If you go to your home fire department and ask them what they use in their foggers for smoke training and why you need it they may be very helpful.
2nd-- on the radiator laid down --- Moving the rad. was one of my concerns when I done the string air flow test and with the arrangement on our boat their was insufficient air flow any ware forward of the existing rad. to try something different. The only air flow was through the storage box under the drivers seat during my testing with the box empty.
I know that Alumitech has tried relocating the rad. for the Long Belt Drive units and has not had very good results as of the last time I ask them about it.
I am eager to hear how your test comes out..
