Son's first duck

Florida Cracker

Well-known member
Opening morning my younger son and I headed to Lake Okeechobee. We set in a area we found birds during scouting. He's been hunting with me for several years, but had not yet connected with a duck. He had a couple of "did you shoot that, or me?" situations though. Well today, he definitely got his own bird, a nice drake mottled. We ended up with 2 mottleds, and missed at several other opportunities. It was a beautiful morning. We were absolutely covered in mottleds, and had a decent amount of teal come by. Also, on the way out we came across some hunters trying to make it out in a mud boat. Two were walking and two were in the boat. We carried the two walkers out, while looking for their companion boat that got stuck on the way in, several hours earlier. We found the second boat and towed it to deeper water and on they went.

Florida Cracker my son also shot his first duck and it was a mottled too.It sure is fun watching them shoot there first duck. This was his first season and he is hooked now.
I ran into Under Pressure at Fisheating Creak ramp on Saturday evening then on the way back in I saw him in front of fish eating bay with his jon boat and pulled him in to the canal so he wouldn't have to push his boat back in.The kicker boat were useless with the water so low.You could see them all over the lake pushing them.I saw a game warden Sunday and he said there letting the lake down to 9.5 feet to scrape the muck so its only going to get worse. He sat there and talked to me and under pressure for a while and WAS WATCHING EVERY AIR BOAT FOR MUFFLERS AND FLAGS.He said he was still writing warnings for flags but tickets for mufflers,so anybody that has not done it yet you better.

Man, it's been 'cylinder heaven' on here lately.
I can send y'all a great link where you can pick up some small block Chevys at a real good price if it'll help ....... :? .

I will never forget the morning my youngest dropped his first duck. When it dropped, he looked at me like "did you shoot"? I started laughing and our old Lab, Spook, was almost halfway out to it by then.
He even seemed to be carryin it a little higher than usual when he brought it in ..... I like to think he knew too.

Thank You again Over Budget for helping us out of the flats. You saved us a good hour plus of pushing!! Also thanks for the good convervsation. I am glad your son had fun, he looks like a good kid. The lake was a joke for the non-airboaters. My legs still hurt. I was able to meet Mad Dog at the hotel and enjoyed a brief chat. One thing I am learning is that the people on SA are the good ones out there. Its been a pleasure meeting everyone so far. Thanks again :D
