sparks?

I have a 6 cyl aircraft engine and I am getting sperks out of the exhaust. I just go this engine and the compression is good on all cylinders, I was just wondering if it's cuased by the timing being off or do I have internal problems. And I also get flames out of the pipes when I throttle down, I know what the flames are from but am worried about the sparks. Thanks for any info.

Fuel mixture is probably on the rich side which is pretty common on most boats I've been around especially when getting off the throttle.

Bandkiller, I agree with jdotson ..... the engine is Way too rich and you're building up carbon in the exhaust ports and pipes that flake off and become little burning sparklers.

Running an engine that rich is not only expensive, but hard on the engine.
If it was mine I'd pull the carb and rebuild it. JMO.
