As time closes in for my boat to start taking shape, I will have more neat questions, but for now how about this un?

Does anybody make decent water/weather proof speakers for the stereo system? :D

Scotty

I have seen several stereo systems instaled on boats at Diamondback and I think they keep the speakers in stock there I am sure if you check a marine supply like Boat US they will have what you are looking for as well.

Thanks Sniper, I just gotta have some tunes sometimes. I like it quiet in camp and all but at times I just like to hear some REAL country & bluegrass taking place.

Now yer talkin, Scotty. Nothin like some good bluegrass to pull it all together.

You may find that vibration is as big an enemy as moisture for a good pair of speakers on your boat. Mounting them with that in mind usually makes 'em sound better longer.

whitebear, the experiences I have had with marine speakers have been negative. Common speakers and radios seem to hold up as long or longer then marine audio. I have just as good reliability with common audio speakers/radios. Many car audio shop owners have told me marine audio is a waste of money. Just paying for the white color!!! But they would be happy to sell them! You can usually buy 2 common audio systems for the price of one marine system. Just keep the components out of the elements for the most part and you should be fine. Just me 2 cents......

Good point, King. A friend of mine put some speakers in his powerboat. He bought some relatively inexpensive Audiovox speakers at Wal-nuts, took them out of their enclosures, slipped them into a zip lock bag, and put them back in. Sealed the connections with a little silicone.

They work just fine. It doesn't have to be expensive to work.

I agree with King on the auto speaker issue. I have also had great success with the weather resistant home audio speakers already in cabinets and supplied with mounting brackets. 4.5" or 5.25" two way is common sizes and the U-shaped brackets work so much better than the ball socket ones for a rougher aplications. I have fabricated my own brackets for the speakers that come with the swivel brackets. Also really good Bass responce! 8) They generally sound great!

I bought a good set of marine poly plainer speakers that sat under water for 48hrs (not freash water) now 3 yrs later they still sound great. My cd player and mp3 is a car unit in a waterproof marine box. The player went out in 2 months from overheating in the waterproof box, I got another under warrenty added a 12v mini fan from radio shack with a stainless vent cover on the top and bottom and it still playes great after almost 3 yrs.

I run the PolyPlanar speakers like Moodfood and i also run their head unit am/fm/cd as well. It is the best you can buy and absolutely waterproof. Mine is perfect after three years and It sits in the weather all the time. Charles

I just have a pair in in a plastic enclosure from the factory. I have them On the sides facing down, the front two are under my bow platform. I also have in a new Pioneer xm ready AM/FM/CD with no problems for the same amount of time. They've been in two years now and no problems. It sits outside all year round here in PA.

Almost ever marine store has water proof speakers. I have run them on my center console for the last 5 years and yes they have been submerged That was a fun day.
