MY STAINLESS RIGGING IS RUSTING . IT WILL WIPE OFF .LIKE A STAIN BUT STILL BOTHERING ME ANY IDEAS WHY OR TO FIX IT NEVER BEEN IN THE WATER YET ! PAINTING GOING TO A B----. IF I GO THAT WAY NOW ! GOT ME P-----. I GOT STAINLESS FOR THE SALT WATER , BUT ANYWAY . THANKS, NOT LOOKING GOOD :D NOT RUSTING AROUND WELDS . JUST EVERWHERE ESLE !I TIG IT THOUGHT IT MIGHT FLASH OFF MR DOING IT BUT DONT KNOW!

Did they pickle it after construction? Most stainless will get minor surface rust but should not get any significant amount. Might think about powder coating.

Snowbowl toilet cleanerer. Spray it on, give it a minute and hose off. Removes rust and stains. Also, the cheap stuff from Dollar General works too.

It has something to do with the make up of the stainless. There are several difference alloys and some are more rustproof than other (SS with more nickel will rust less -I think). The less magnetic it is, I was told the less it will rust. I have been told that a coat of paint or powder coating will prevent further rust from starting.

Take one of those stainless leathermans and leave it outside somewhere with salty air for about 7 months. I promise you it will rust and even pit. I have a very rusty super leatherman that is proof.

Big Boom - I will file that information away. Thanks for the tip.

Fatboy, there is a product called Nyalic. The Eastwood company has it in their catalog or you can also find it online. It comes in a spray-can, and after you've cleaned your rigging, you can spray this stuff on and it stops corrosion and oxidation for quite a while. It's clear, nylon based, and stops corrosion on wiring connections too.

I've used it on the brass on boats with good results.

Fatboy, there is a product called WD-40. You can find it at any store or you can find it online. It comes in a spray can and before you clean your rigging you can spray this stuff on and it stops corrosion and oxidation for quite a while. It's clear and stops corrosion on electrical connections too.

I've used it on everything with good results.

BF, hope you don't mind my spoof on your post, just popped into my head as I was reading

No problem, Red. I thought it was funny, actually. I just assumed that Fatboy already knew about WD-40 and was lookin' for something a little more industrial strength ..... .
