Any body running a Dick Waters starter? I have the 2.7 hp version bought in 2016 after the first? version I got from him failed after16 years. The 2.7 hp starter was his new improved version . He told me it was off a diesel but I never got a part # from him for it. Brought the starter to a rebuild shop in homestead and they gave me some numbers to try and what they said was a DENSO 228000-297. It mounts up right but the bendix gear is larger than the original and won’t mesh to the fly wheel. It’s on an o540 angle valve and it’s 11 tooth. Hopefully somebodies been through this and can steer me in the right direction

Did your old starter have an 11 tooth bendix? The 11 tooth bendix fits the 148 tooth flywheel. If the old one has the 9 tooth you should be able to swap them.

The old starter does have an 11 tooth bendix gear that I could swap out, but was hoping to identify exactly what that 2.7 hp motor is and buy one with a new and correct bendix gear

The old toyota starters match up. There are lots of lycoming starter threads on here. I usually just use google for whatever I am looking for and add southernairboat and you will get the threads with the most traffic.

One of the starter part numbers I have used is Denso starter,9202-63011. I will have to look up the Toyota # in by boat records. Denso is the starter manufacture. The stiffener plate goes on around drive and is oval shaped to have starter mount bolts go through it. The mounting ears on starter will be about 1/2 in. thick all the way on ear. The ears on the wrong starter is thinner. The starter is used on V6- turbo Toyota. I use this starter on my 0540. With the thinner starter ears, if the engine kicks back it will break ears off even with plate.

IO-540 Starter help

For what it's worth, the prices online for "whatever" brand starter that fits are not too much lower than the price from Norman Clay. What he sells you will fit and work, no junk. They ship UPS from Okeechobee no problem.
