My IO540 starts great when cold or restarts great when restarted within 30 minutes, after that I haven't figured the right sweet spot, have tried a few things , spinning with no fuel, with fuel ect, any secret ideas out there?
 
try turning it over w/ the mags off, then turn them on. But it sounds werid to me, most people i know have trouble getting them to start after running them, and when they cool off, they fire right up. but try that
 
I once had a lyc. 0290 angle valve that would crank great untill it got hot
and would run all day long but if you shut it down when it was hot you
had better be ready to wait untill it cooled completely down before it would crankup again. turned out to be the coils in the mags were bad
replaced the coils and never had a problem again.
 
Look at the coils , if they have any age to them they will be subject to build up resistance due to any open wire in the primary windings that will occure from expansion and contraction from heating and cooling. Moisture will also find its way into the windings if the insulation has any voids or openings. They are cheap enough to replace and may save you walking one day. Hope this helps

I have an IO540 and have found that If I have the mixture control in idle cutoff, spin the engine with both mags on, and then advance the mixture control to full rich, it usually will start. But, I have a friend that has to start in full rich. If it doesn't start, then I will go to full lean, full throttle with the mags off, and spin the engine to clear it. Then go back and do the restart again.

They are nice, but temperamental. Good luck

Could be the coils as stated above, but i see a lot of guys that have to learn their motor. Injected motors flood easy when hot. Everybody has a little different way of starting their motor that may work for them but maybe not you.
 
Or does your fuel line run too close to something that gets hot and maybe it is causing the fuel to "vapor lock" ?
 
I seem to be favoring the vapor lock on my motor, my spider lines are close to the headers, is there something I might put on them to reflect the heat?
