straight 6 car motors

Has anyone tried this? I once saw a 300 ford, sounds like a good idea, work great in trucks for low end torque. I'd like a 292 chevy.

Just thinking out loud:)

A lot of people have run the in-line 6's with good success. Another guy on here a couple of weeks back told us that he'd had 15 years of service out of an in-line Chevy. Works for ME!! It ain't all about horsepower.

Sorry guy’s it’s just me I would look into the old slant six Dodge that was all aluminum. They are tough as nails that motor and the 300 straight 6 Ford would be my choices (only if I had to run a six cylinder)

In the early 80’s there was a guy who raced at West Palm he had a Nova with a Chevy straight 6 292 it was called Buzzing Half Dozen the car flew for what it was I think it ran mid 10’s and did some cool wheel stands. It was cool to watch run.

Thunder, when I was in high school (yeah, I know ..... a loonnng time ago) one of the popular engine swaps was to pull the stock 250 out of a Chevy and drop in a 292 GMC. A buddy of mine had one with headers (homemade) and two carbs on it that would RUN.

A few years later, the same guy built a little C/ Altered roadster with a 302 c.i. GMC 6, with Hilborn direct port fuel injection that embarassed a lot of V8 cars.

Six bangers do have a lot of torque, and I've seen a few on airboats. But Thunder, Your only half right on the slant-six, yes they have excessive bottom end stability and can turn high rpms, they were( as far as I know) never aluminum. plus the off side weight would have to be considered. Chrysler folk did do a Hyper-pak version with factory headers and four bbl carb back in the 60's . I used to drag race slant sixes in high school way back when.

Swampjet .... you could offset the battery and the radiator to the left side of the boat to help with the balance. Just thinkin' out loud

Your right Thunder, they do/did exsist . I only had '64 and up. I'll be keeping a better look out in the boneyards.Hmmmm.

I always like trying goofy S&%# another combo I have wanted to build and have talked other people into is the all aluminum 4 banger Ford it Utilizes a Cobra Jet head and has allot of potential. I think their rated at almost 200HP stock. Ford built the motors for Mercury marine. Their fairly cheap and very light and have allot of potential. However after all this playing around even with V/6’s I have found the LS1 just kills everything in all aspects. The only reason I would run any other car motor would be cost and then in that case I would run a direct drive Old’s.

Thunder, Swamp has got my tired ol' brain workin again ...... aluminum slant 6, 12.5' hull, direct drive ..... good headers, one good muffler. 72" PowerShift Cypress 2 blade.

Tell me what you think it could be built for with a new hull, and rebuilt--right engine?

There sure seems to be a lot of alum motors out there of many different configerations. Thunder PLEASE tell me WHY nobody is running a cad northstar with gearbox? The dang things are super light and got horses once the rpms are up.

Also as far as four bagers- about a year ago I sold my '91 Dodge spirit R/T. One of only 1204 built; it had a 2.2 DOHC, turbocharged that developed 224 horses. FACTORY PRODUCTION. The head was developed by Lotus for Chrysler. It was fun as heck and suprised many a mustang! I sold it to a guy in Davie, Fl. He bought it sight unseen cash down when I threatened to cut it up and make an airboat out of it.
Did I do the right thing? It would have worked good on a little deckover don'tcha think?

I'm running a chevy 250 six banger in my boat. About 2 1/2 years ago I even had a turbo on blowing through a holley 600 double pumper, I sure got some strange looks with all that hardware haging off the side of the motor. Ran awesome with the turbo, 9lbs. of boost brought me from 2500 rpm to 3200 rpm. Tried out 12lbs and the stock wore out bottom end decided to let go, blew the piston tops off of 4 pistons, cracked head and block, and no oil pressure. the motor still let me drive it 45min. back to the ramp, just had to keep it under 2000 or it started to seize. The 250 is definatly the moto reliable motor I have ever seen on an airboat, even had to hand prop it twice when the starter died.

Hey Larry, that sounds like a fun ride except the blowing up part :( , But cool is cool and what did some of use say back in high screwall--BITCHIN MAN.

Ann drives a little Chrysler Sebring CV that has a gorgeous little 2.7 liter, dual OHC four in it. That little engine is so quiet and smooth that half the time (when she lets me drive it :? ) I have to keep checkin' the dash to make sure it's still runnin.

Tell me that wouldn't make a sweet, light, quiet 2 person boat .... and it should get all-weekend runnin' out of a 30 gal. tank.

K.

I know what you mean. Janis has a plymouth sundace that won't quit. The car looks like bad stuff, but even the a/c keeps cold. If I happen on the right little hull at the right price, hmmmmm.

We could cut weight by only have 10 gal tanks!

The Caddy North Stars don’t live in airboats and their torque less wonders. The inline 4 banger Ford makes good torque it's a big inch four banger and has a ton of aftermarket parts for it. The trick is not only to pick a good engine platform but one that parts are easily accessible for. I have had three people tell me they popped a North Star with little time on them. Oh yea they’re expensive too.
