Stripping Paint to Powder Coat Rigging

What is the best way to clean up rigging that is already painted so that it can be powder coated? Or would it be cheaper/easier to just start fresh?

I just finished rebuilding a rigging and had it powder coated. The company that did the powder coat first bead blasted and primed it before the powder coat. Unfortunately the guy who did the bead blasting didn't do a very good job and the powder coat came out with about a hundred pin holes. I was able to salvage it by touching it up with enamel paint but I know it's there and not real happy with it. It does look pretty good though.

If I had to do it again I'd just go with stainless and be done with it. By the time you buy the materials and pay someone to powder coat it there's not that much difference in cost and Stainless will last a lifetime.

I did not know they bead blast it before the spray the powder. And i would love to build stainless rigging but i have heard its a few thousand for materials and I dont have a tube bender for stainless while my conduit rigging was a few hundred bucks in material and heard powder coat was 500 to 1000 to get done.

Make sure they prep it right for powder coat. Seen my buds cage rust out 3 to 1 verse my cage my cage it emt with paint his 3 were with powder. Its in the prep. I seen companies powder right over rust.

Painting the rigging with a high quality paint and clear coat is always the better alternative to powder coating. But not cheaper if the right process/products are used. House of Colors or PPG Products will work just fine. If you dont have the prep work done correctly neither paint nor powder coat is effective. Stainless is heavy and expensive, but you would save on not having to coat the rigging. Innovative Powdercoating did my engine stand & rigging for $650.00 and turn around is quick.

Yea i painted the rigging i built for my last boat with good auto paint in a gun and it sucked to get everything covered and was close to the cost of powder.
