Sumpter County Trouble ` When & Where is the hearing ?

Daddy Dave

Well-known member
Can someone bring us up to speed on the effort to ban airboat use in the evenings and after dark on certain Sumpter County lakes? My understanding is the hearing is schedules very soon.

This note is from Jim Brown of Lake County re: Sumpter County:

Dave

"The next meeting will be held at the Villages, on July 11TH at 5:00 PM. Hopefully you can make it."

Jim

I will try to get more info -

Florida Airboaters - Please mark your calenders and make time to attend, Please.

Isn't that just typical? They know that most folks work until 5:00 ....... this is intentionally set to try and cut down on the number of airboaters that willl be able to attend.
That is cowardly on the part of Sumpter's officials, and indicates to me that they're going to try to force this issue through in spite of the airboaters in their county.
Remember that we are the hated minority in most cases like this one.

I hadn't figured on attending before, but I'm gonna make every effort to be at that meeting now.

A phone call to Sumpter County Board of County Commissioners (352-793-0200) reveals a proposed ordinance amendment to restrict airboat use will be considered on July 11.

The Historic Court House located at 209 N. Florida Street, 2nd Floor, Rm. 222, Bushnell, FL 33513 is the site for the meeting.

Chris Morrison, Commission Secretary says the meeting will be held on July 11 @ 5:00 PM.

The action to be considered is final approval of a Sumpter County ordinance to ammend the hours of legal operation for airboats on Lake Miona and Lake Deaton to restrict airboat use to specific daylight hours. Ms. Morrison said the Commission usually allows public testimony on all actions being considered.

I'll do my best to be there. Everyone needs to give some thought as to what should be said as for reasons this should not happen. I know, I know, but just saying it isn't fair probably won't have much impact on them. It is gonna have to be some other foundations such as gator management hunts, family time, missing people search etc. Its need to be explained that the airboats have just had to be modified with mufflers and that this in itself might satisfy the complaints. How much revenue is generated in the county from airboats. So forth and so on. If I am not on the right page , then correct me so we can all be on the same page when we get there. Later

I havent seen a county comission yet that won't use this exact same tactic. All cut from the same mold.

Just thought I would post on here to bring it back to the surface as a reminder so we can get some support there Tues. Thanx, Cajun

All in attendance should be polite and orderly - first & second. There is already in place a county ordinance that closes the county park - the only access point to Miona and Deaton at 8 pm.

My position will be to ask for time so the new muffler law can reduce the sound levels of airboats using both lakes. If that falls short, they are already on thin ice because the existing park / ramp access hours is likely illegal as federal funds were used in the ramp's construction and federal law requires 24 / 7 accessability for all vessels on ramps they fund.

Atty. Gen. Charlie Christ has an opinion that any county ordinance singling out airboats alone is most likely unconstitutional.
