Sumter County Showdown Tuesday Afternoon - Help if U Can

Daddy Dave

Well-known member
There is an important meeting for all airboaters tomorrow night at "The Villages" in Sumter County where a county commissioner plans an attempt to discriminate against airboaters on Lake Miona.

Bonnie Basham and Swampjet, on behalf of FAA, have been working hard on this issue and with a strong, polite turnout of supporting airboaters, we think the effort can be defeated and our anti-discrimination bill can gain it's first victory. The meeting time is 5:30 PM - inconvenient to us.

If you simply can't get there, please send the commissioners an email asking them not to discriminate against airboats, to treat all motor vessels equally and simply enforce the county ordinance already in place.

There is likely a one vote swing on this one. Please try to attend. Copy Bonnie with your emails: capital.ideas@att.net

BigDaddy, what is at the heart of this ordinance ...... no airboating at night, or no airboats altogether?

There are other threads on this already posted. This action was prompted by residents at the upscale "Villages" retirement complex. Their numbers are such they exert near control over traditional Sumter County interests. There is currently in place a county ordinance that prohibits all vessels from launching between dusk and dawn at the only access park to Lake Miona. Rather than pass an airboat discrimination ordinance, we feel it would be much better to simply enforce the laws currently on the books.

I understand very clearly the influence that the Villages has there.

So the answer is, no airboats altogether? Just need to know if I'm to try and write an intelligent letter. That the launch has been built using Federal funds (24 / 7 access) seems to be what is at stake. No discrimination against airboats is a given. Am I missing something?

I sent my emails. is this the same vote that got tabled recently ubtil they could see where they stood on the no discrimination thing, looks like they figured it out quickly if its back already.

Their proposed action is to discriminate against airboats. It was tabled at a previous meeting where it had been expected to pass easily. FAA's position is any action must be against all motor boats or no motor boats. There are two of five commissionaers that are Villiages spokesmodels.

FAA / We need a strong, polite turnout to keep the others on the right track. Anything they do to limit access to that ramp is probably a federal violation - a point that Bonnie Basham made very clear to them.

email sent........IMO when you want people to do this make it easy as possible. All the email addresses and a quick note that can be cut and pasted and sent by all work best.

Last time, a few of us found it even when it was spelled wrong. Hope now that we've gotten the spelling right - more show up.

Hey guys! The mjority of complaints are coming from the residents of The Villages(obviously) and the residents of the new condo complex Lakeside Landings. They hate boats, end of story. They really want us off the lake all together, but will settle for an 8pm-8am curfew. Yeah right! If we let that pass, the next thing will be a countywide curfew of 8-8. Not gonna happen!

Anyway, The Villages itself has elected 2 commissioners from out there in The Villages bubble. What we really need is a strong presence. Let's show them that airboaters are concerned, tax paying citizens. More importantly, let's show them that we VOTE!! That is where ya get them!!

My husband's boat has never been in Lake Miona. It is a small lake, and would not be too much fun to ride in, I guess you would ride in a (very small) circle.

But, for those who enjoy it, you should be able to use it.

The boat ramp itself was federally funded. Federal funded ramps by law need to be open 24/7. So there, maybe we can use that. I hear that our lobbyist(Bonnie) is going to use that.

Sorry for the rambling, I am very strong willed about this!
Airboaters are great people, so please come and show that!!

Joey Chandler is the airboating commissioner, so direct most of your emails to the other commisioners!

The place is LAUREL MANOR REC CTR. (take 466 East, past Bob Evans on the right, it is fairly large)
[/b]

See ya there

good facts about the ramp.............except, Arthur Marshall loxahatchee has been federally run and it closes at sundown??

We won with a 2-3 vote to not adopt the 8am-8pm ruling. Remember because they had to have a supermajority (4 out of 5) to discriminate against airboats. This is a win for airboaters. There was a good turnout of the airboaters and I want to Thank all of you that showed and for all the E-mails and support from those that couldn't make it.
A special Thanks to Bonnie (Bondo) for all the hard work you are doing for us. This proves just how valuable you are to the airboating community
The airboat speakers were (forgive me if I leave someone out) Capt. Dave Markett (BigDaddy), Danny Brantley (Branco), Jim Brown, Lee Chamberlain, Eddie Parrot, Tiffany Parrot (JDBOATR),Bonnie Bashem (Bondo),and myself. I do think there were others but I got called out of the room during the meeting for a spell and may have missed someone so I apologize.

Bob
