Sunday Ride

Well me and the wife hooked up the boat and headed out to the lake yesterday morning. The day started off rough. Just outside of Mulberry the trailer blew a tire. Fixed it and drove on.

Got to Big John's Store on Camp Mack Rd (which sell's AVGAS now by the way!!!) about 11:30 and filled up. Got to Camp Mack shortly there after and WOW!!! was it packed. Finally got the boat in the water and along with BigDaddy, Swampjet, HarryT, Brett, and the Corey's headed out toward Lake Cypress fish camp.

BigD led the way and decided he wanted to run the willow trail up to dead river and out through Ready Creek. Well, I had just ran that two nights before and I knew it was DRY so he went in and nobody followed. We waited and waited....and waited and finally he popped back out from whence he came and we carried on.

Finally made it to the restaurant and found Danny Brantley and the KRVSA crew enjoying lunch. We sat and ordered food and waited and waited and waited..which isn't so bad when you're with good company. Food came and it was great!!!

Well we decided to hit the water when it started raining so we ran back inside to wait it out. Well we waited and waited and waited (you can see my theme here now right??) and finally after about 3 hours of solid rain it slackened and we could here Gardner Marsh softly calling like a mermaid beckoning mariners to there doom...

With Stevie Jurnigan leading the way we shot through the hole in the wall and blasted south. Stopped at the square pond and then continued on to North Cove. The marsh was beautiful!!!! 1-2 inches of water the whole way.

Nicole and I decided to head off on our own after that and we made a short pit stop at the Milk Bus before heading back around to BS Hill. While watching the sun slowly creep down Officer Matt Erwin stopped by and we BS'd for a while.

Finally, just as the sun reached the tree tops we headed back in and put the boat on the trailer. It was a wonderful day spent with wonderful people in one of the greatest places I know of.

Scout, sounds like fun, except maybe all the waiting....

I rode Orange Sunday and today and had a blast. We rode all the way around the lake today and hit a lot of trails. Even parked under US 301 bridge for a while for some shade.

BPS,

Sounds like a nice day! Good to hear the waters finally up out there.

You didn't say how well the new sled performed?

Folks, I finally figured our why PBS is so skinny. He can't get served anywhere he goes. Everyone else at Lake Cypress Fish Camp got orders in and food delivered except the Scout Pack. We got to wait and wait and wait. I think this was a preplanned demonstration of Scout's new job. Iffin you ride with that man, figger out a way to get there befo he does or plan on a prolonged diet.

As to "Da Ride", it was Heaven on Earth. Ol' Gardners was just a wigglin its naked butt right at us as that rain fell and fell and fell and we waited and waited and waited. BIG GOBBLER AND HIS BUNCH HAD LEFT OUT IN FRONT OF THE RAIN SAYING,"ANYONE FOOL ENOUGH TO TRY TO CROSS THAT MESS WILL END UP WITH A SCORCHED MOTOR."

Well, it rained for about two hours non stop and believe it or not the assembled rednecks drank the place OUT of Bud Light. Time to go.

"Turbo" Jurnigan led the way. His Don Davis sled / turbo 200 Lycoming is a marvel, even including the damn orange flag. We played and slid up toward the Hole In The Wall - well, that thing just reached out and grabbed a hold of usns. There was no defense.

In we went. It was incredible. Slick as boiled okra and curlew stew. BPS's new Hammant deckover never much broke an idle and he was gettin' it. Turbo was likewise. SwampJet and Me, well, we were just a scootin. It was pure bootiful. Down the long slew - actually, down the pasture beside it, we all went. Crossed about a hundred yards south of the rough North Road Crossing with no effort and easily back down along the marsh.

Never broke 2,500. Strait shot southward along the myrtles and hammocks across three inches or so of water all the way - towards the Catfish Pond / Square Pond / BillyGoat ridge and -- LO, there were three other boats sittin high and proud and smilin big. They had come in from North Cove. Gettin It Done. Airboat Heaven had the Welcome mat out.

Heard later that a boat tried to make it from BS Hill and broke a crank in the process. Have no other reports of access from that end. Pretty sure the low spots have water in them and the high and dry humps are black & green and very sticky. Another couple of soakers and all will be Right with Our World to make the full loop.

That is unless the Nutlets get us.

Please come on Thursday.

BigD, I ain't gonna be skinny for too much longer cause Nicole cooked me another batch o' cookies the other day...MMMM,MMM!!! 2 dozen down, 4 more to go!!!

But yes, the new boat did fine, but I don't think any of the boats in our group had to work all that hard that day, it was GREAT!!!

FWC officer Erwin went in by the hill that evening and I didn't think he was going to come out but he finally made it. I saw one guy come out of the marsh by BS Hill while I was talking with Officer Erwin. He did seem to struggle a bit towards the end so it's probably still sticky in there. I'll be going Wednesday night to poke around and I'll be sure and stick my nose in there and check it out for everyone.

BTW, if you are coming to put in at Camp Mack and need fuel, Big John's right there on Camp Mack Road now has AVGas and plenty of other little goodies for a day on the water. They may be a few more pennies more but they are AMERICAN OWNED and OPERATED and it's right on the way in. Super nice people too!!
