Well-known member
I AM FIXING TO BUY A SUPER CHARGE 054O UPSTACK. IT GOING TO BE ON ALL ALUMINUM RIGGING WITH A DECK OVER PALMBEACH ALUMINUM DIAMOND BACK HULL. IT HAS A 80" MAXIUMUS PROP. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY COMMENTS ON THIS MOTOR AND BOAT.
THANKS

If you really want to buy a 18' barge I don't know why you would consider this at all. And if all you want is affordable fun by yourself, you should look into one of those MIni airboats! Couldn't resist! 8)

My only question would be what is it for? If it is a ride boat/hunt boat/ race boat. Sounds like a bad machine. I am not exactly sure what Cold was talking about?? Any pictures of it??? One other thing and this is not meant in anyway other than just a question. Are Diamondback's deckovers really a palmbeach style?? Not try to be a smart A$$ just asking a question. I know Thunder has a Diamondback and I know cowboy has a palmbeach hull. To me there looks like a difference. But I don't really know if there is. I would assume a thurman hull is not a palm beach hull. Educate me fellows.

Consider these things about that Supercharged 0540. The weight of the gear nose block. Supercharged Lycomings are very heavy. Second consider the maintainence/upkeep of a supercharged engine, in which EXTRA fuel consumption goes hand in hand. Third, make sure you consider the realiability of a supercharged engine, you can't just run down to the Lycoming parts store and grab a replacement supercharger. Fourth, some supercharged Lycomings have a seperate oil sump, again, that leads to potential broken oil lines, broken sump, etc..... Anything and everything will get moved around by that 80 inch prop. Last but not least, some supercharged Lycomings came with a gear reduction which enabled them to swing a HUGE prop, and some were rated above 300HP, which made up for the extra weight of the gear nose. Do some research on the motor. Look up the numbers and call around to make sure its an 0540 and not an 0470. I would take the numbers down and call Jr Jurnigans shop.

hmgm123,

That will be an awesome setup! A good friend of mine had a supercharged 480 with the gear on a 14 ft Klein full deck. That boat was unstoppable. It burned alot of fuel but it was a beast. He said he wish he had a little bit longer hull for that powerplant (about 15 ft). Post some pics when you get them.

cfth,

I believe Diamondback does build a Palm Beach style hull or if they do not build it themselves they will have one built and rig it out for you.

Yes a Thurman style boat and a Palm Beach style boat are 2 very different looking and performing airboats. They are both great hulls!

YEAH IT ON A 13FT HULL. IT IS A PALM BEACH STYLE HULL MADE BY DIAMOND BACK. HERE IS A PIC FROM DIAMOND BACK WEB SITE. BOAT IS FOR PLEASURE NOT RACING. MAYBE A LITTLE HILL BURNING

I ran a supercharged 0-480........picts on my page
The supercharged engines are very powerful, but very hard on cylinders. Do yourself a favor, have a leak down test done before you buy this engine, this test injects compressed air into the cylinder at 80psi, and measured how much pressure stays in the cylinder,,,,,it should have at least 60/80, at min. The heat 15 pounds of supercharged boost makes, esp. with a gear box is tremendous, piston ring lands are the first thing to go, esp. if it has cast pistions. If it has forged pistons it is a big plus. you must run A/V gas, and get readdy to burn alot. At takeoff a 0540 supercharged is rated 52 gal. an hour. I would burn 35 to 50 gal. messing arround in a day,,,burnt 65 gal the first day I got mine fixed. The supercharger front seal is costly at $750, IF you can find one. If youve got the buck's, there alot of fun. If you have any additional questions let me know.

THE MOTOR HAS ONLY 4 HRS ON IT. NOT SURE ABOUT THE PISTON TYPE. THE REASON I AM BUYING THIS BOAT IS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO HANG WITH THE BIG DOGS.BUT THEN AGAIN I NOT SURE IF THIS MOTOR IS THE WAY TO GO.

Who did the top job/ rebuild?.......I put the 15357 thurmal tech forged pistons in mine, at 3400 it would make 15 pounds of boost. It was a rocket ship 4 sure. They are a dry sump engine as well. External Oil tank,,,,the location of the suction line is very important, as it needs to be away from the feeder line comming from the oil cooler.....

I would still have a leak down test done. I bought my boat from a guy in Inverness who assured me the engine was new, well $ 4500 later, it ran great...I was told "i stand behind the work",,,and hung up on me when I told him the pistons were junk.....BUYER BE WARE

YEAH DAVIE, I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH JERRY, HE SAID THE PISTON ARE FORGE. THAT IT'LL PRODUCE 21 POUNDS OF BOOST AT 3400 RPM. I ALSO ASK ABOUT THE FUEL CONSTUMPTION. HE SAID LONG AS YOU KEEP YOUR FOOT OUT THE GAS ALL THE TIME YOU'LL BE SUPRISE AT THE GPH. THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO TURN AS MANY RPM TO DO WHAT OTHER HAVE TO DO.

ALSO I DON'T BELIEVE IT WOULD DO ANY GOOD TO DO A LEAK DOWN ON A MOTOR THAT THE RINGS ARE NOT SEATED YET????

I DON'T WANT TO GO FAST, JUST WANT TO GO ON THE HILL WITH THE BEST OF THEM. I SURE DO APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT DAVIE,
THANKS

Putting a SuperCharged 540 on that WesrPalm Beach hull and you might find out it may roll over easer with that much torque having the sides rolled up that much.My buddy just sold his cause it burnt too much fuel.

YEAH, I KINDA THOUGHT THE SAME THING. I GUESS IF GET TO BE A PROBLEM AND I DECIDE TO KEEP RUNNING THAT MOTOR, I'LL JUST HAVE TO GO WITH A MORE SUITABLE HULL. MAYBE SOME WITH A DECK OVER WILL TRADE?

You will go up the hill, over the hill. thru the hill,,,,,,
re read what were telling ya.......gas...lots...lots
leak down..............
parts not made anymore.........
heavy..700+ pounds
torque..ALOT...over 700 foot pounds
Id sell ya mine, but I alleady sold it.......guy tried to fly, no wings...hell be fine after all the sugerys heal.....the word's...AS-IS,,,,Where is..at your own risk,,,,,sure glad the B.O.sale said it.

I would consider putting a cooling cowl on it. Also are you buying the motor from a local airboat dealer. Looks like it will be a bad ride.
