Supper trap Surprise

Sniper

Well-known member
After having some modifications done to my gearbox and then re in staling it on my boat and getting the prop all dialed back in and checking my rpm I decided to see what kind of rpm change I would get if I took the Super traps off the tail pipe's I all ready have mufflers on the boat I had in stalled the Super traps to see if I could make the boat even quieter and I have never run my WaterThunder LS6 with out them they came with 12 plates but after seeing I had header leaks from to much back pressure I added 4 more plates to each side which took care of the problem and with that set up I was turning 5500 rpm when I took them off the other day and ran the boat with just mufflers I picked up 400 rpm's so I called WaterThunder and told him this he laughed and said that equates to probably to 75 to 100 hp increase I was shocked and even more shocked when I ran it on the river needless to say I am either going to have to order a lot more plates for the super traps or there not going back on there it does not seem to be any louder but it does have a little deeper sound at idle man that small block moves some air

Sniper leave them off, please. You know how much work is involved to pick up 400RPM. It's bad enough with a normal two blade prop but to pick up 400RPM with a three blade superwide usually takes around 100hp shot of N2O!

Great Sniper. Maybe you could try a small straight thru, resonator style bullet muffler for a little more reduction. Back pressure should not be a problem with them. That shows how experimenting can really pay off. P.S. Try throwing in some puncuation every now and then  .LOL

i run super trapps on my diamondback. when i installed them, i used the 12 disk's per side that came with the mufflers. i had been running strait exhaust prior to this and i did loose some bottom end power. i have since, order more disk's and now run 24 per side and have no problems at all and gained back the power i had lost. its a ZZ4 motor and 2 blade powershift prop.

I have told several people the best way to see how restrictive an exhaust system is you just measure EGT's. The more restrictive the muffler the hotter it will be. I see a lot of those tiny mufflers that do not reduce any noise they just meet the law! And I see a bunch off mufflers that are horsepower corks! I like a muffler that flows and reduced sound! There are a few good ones. The higher dollar Borla's are quite and flow great and for a budget the Summit racing stainless mufflers are great. I won the sound competition using the cheap Summits. When the inlet and outlet are on opposite sides the muffler is also quieter! Anyway I ran a set of those tiny mufflers and they turned brown in 5 minutes those things were so restrictive you could feel the heat 3 feet away! Well thanks for sharing that info Sniper! I know your chomping at the bit for a fuel injection don't worry I will hook you up! P.S. maybe a cam upgrade too while were at it, I know you run your boat allot and have every RPM and sound memorized so you will be a great reference and info input for my new cam grind!

I talked to the fellow at CAD 500 a while back and we were talking about exhaust noise. He stated that they were getting into trouble with the law in Arizona when running Flowmasters on the hot Cadillacs. They did some tests on the chassis dyno and found when using a glasspack style muffler the sound was lessened and found no drop in HP. There are many styles of small, straight thru mufflers on the market. Which ones did you try so we can eliminate the bad ones!!

Under pressure

I'll use punctuation this time, I have my glasses on and it's not 6am so I see a little better now. I have magna Flows on my boat and they seem to work real good, now I am looking forward to Thunder playing with the motor some more and seeing what he can do with the fuel injection and a different cam

Hey Sniper remember this boat! We just switched it over to fuel injection it's a 550HP LS1 he is gonna be pleasantly surprised next time he pours on the coals!
