Take a deep breath first...

OK, fellers (and lady or two) take a deep breath before you read this and bear in mind I have no hidden agenda and I'm not taking a poke at anyone. Still with me? OK, another deep breath....now for all of y'all car motor boys (and girls), tell me about longevity of the car motor. I am an airplane engine kinda guy, but I'd like to know more about car engines for airboats. Specifically, how long do they last? The reason I'm asking is because it seems like I'm always hearing about somebody blowing one. DO NOT BE OFFENDED, I'm just asking the question.

Bo Hawg,
If you keep apoligisin like that one of those big natural light BEERCANS is gonna fall on you like in the commercial.
I am in between boats and like you want to know how much abuse they can stand.
Seen Car motors exhaust headers cherry red and so hot they start back firing. let em cool off for 20 min or so while you are beating down cane to take off again then crank up and hammer on it.
It would seem that this is horrible abuse but doesen't seem to affect them.
What do AC motors do?

Well, I have run both, and with a reduction unit, a car motor will go places UNDER HEAVY LOAD that an aircraft engine will not go. And do it longer and more economically. I am talking a 16 ftx7.6 boat, 10 men, 2 dogs, ten guns, a BBQ grill, 50 gallons of fuel, and two coolers, and all their stuff. On the dry, over a levee, stopping and starting. And I agree, its the exceptional auto engine that does this. But no aircraft engine does this with this load. NOW, before the flamers come out, I am the first one to say that a light aircraft boat will go places an automotive boat only dreams of, spinning in places a car motor boat wont, and running through a head without knocking down all the trees doing it. Bottom line---if you need finesse and speed----go with aircraft. If you need king kong, go with automotive. And I am the first one to acknowledge that the new version of automotive engines that are all aluminum is beginning to blur that distinction. For dry pasture running, I vote for most aircraft rigs. Can't wait for all the friendly replies...lol. Charles

Maybe you should widen the Question. Car motors with Reduction units making the motors spin upward of 6 g's compared to Aircraft motors when it comes to motor failure.
Just my .02cents.

i believe charles ment to say if you need king kong - big auto reduction.

and now with the higher reduction units and better (fatter) props cruisin low rpm is the norm--- not this 6000 rpm stuff......

Thanks T-Rex--a typo--I fixed it. Obviously, a direct drive automotive, which I ran for 18 years, wont touch a properly rigged aircraft engine for the long haul.

I can tell you how every person will answer this one they will tell you what ever they own is the best. As for car motor gearbox most turn 4,800 to 5,500RPM but very rarely. I will also state the hardest and most abused airboat I have ever seen was a car motor which still runs to this day and has never been rebuilt. I have several friends who have rebuilt their AC motors many times to this car motor. If you really beat your boat or haul a ton of weight or a bunch of people you need a car motor. Think about it have you ever seen a tour boat or a 20 foot airboat with a O540 on it I haven't. Here is my angle nothing pushes like a car motor and you can really run em hard and long but nothing runs like a light aircraft in the water. The best two riding boats in the water I ever rode on before I built mine were aircrafts on light wide hulls. I loved the way they performed and how free they were in the water so I set out to make a car motor ride the same or better in the water. It’s my personal preference but I don’t enjoy driving airboats that are over 13ft. Their just not airboats to me their barges. I love a light nimble airboat that can jump on a plane in 10 ft. But I like the big horsepower of a car motor so I built a boat with the power of a car motor and the weight of an aircraft. I have owned around ten boats 5 gearbox car motor and 4 AC and one DD none of them can do anything anywhere near what my present boat can do they each had their strong point but also had many more weak ones. All I can say is don’t knock any of them until you have drove em for a while.

It all depends on if you want to ride in a Volkswagen or a full sized van.
OOOPPPPSSS I'm form up North so I should not have posted, SORRY ---

Ron, you post whatever, whenever you want. You're family.

I met a gentleman this summer that had been running the same Lycoming engine, virtually untouched, for the past 24 years. I don't remember his name but Swampjet could tell you. He belongs to CCAA.

I run Chevys, but it seems rediculous to me to expect that I can get 24 years of service on an airboat from a small block Chevy engine. It ain't gonna happen.

"WT" how many hours will one of your LS 500 hp motors be good for?
Doing alot of crusing at 30 to 35 mph and runing dry ground here and there for about 300 yds at a time.

What kind of hours will you get it you take care of it but you have to run it a little hard now ande then?

Olf his name is Bill Johns we call him Mr. Bill.

That is a strong running 4 clyinder

I had 125 hrs on my last Car motor and no problems and it got run farley hard the only reason I changed it is because I wanted one of Thunders motors and to run a fat prop so now I have a motor that weighs less than a 6 cyclinder aircraft motor and has the car motor hp and I am burning half the fuel that I used to and to date no motor problems and a lot more power

I have been running my SBC 400 for the twelve years I have owned it. Don't think there were many hours on it when I got it. I've had to replace small things but have never had to crack the motor. IMO that you get the crank balanced and blueprinted itwill help with longer motor life especially running higher RPM's as with reduction units. This is the third hull I've had the motor on at it's still running strong.
