Temps and equipment

Hey fellas...

More questions! I have taken my new 16x7 out fot the first time on my own and have to say I'm addicted. It's a 350 direct drive....

It's running 220 degrees....what can I do to knock this down? What should it be at?

It's swinging a 70 inch wood paddle prop, I want more low end......will a composite prop witha different pitch help out?

What kind of radiator does it have? How many cores? Is it new or out of an auto? How far from prop to the radiator? What thermostat does the engine have in it? Whats the timing set at? What jetting is in the carb?

So many things can effect the temp.

You can experiment with a composite prop more and cheeper cause it is adjustable. SOME are quieter and some may push better. Though I suspect in a DD application the ones that push better is because they can be made to more closely fit the hulls needs.

There is no magick bullet for making a boat that won't run dry get up and fly across the field. Its a process of small trials and errors and tuning the hull, fuel, engine and prop. As always weight is a factor. If ya just want it to get on a plane faster from the bottom end, then that may come with cooling down the engine and getting it running right.

We need more info to help much.

Sounds like ya got a fun machine though :)

I thought it was running hot...I took it fairly easy and ran for 5 mins the let her cool for 20 before runnin' again. I'm going to take it in to a performance shop and have it gone through. For all you guys down south how are your keeping your rigs cool in the heat?

I guess I thought that it was like a vehicle engine and that more air/speed = lower temps. It didn't matter if I ran wide open or half throttle....

Webfoot, it's also possible that your temp gauge is wrong but I wouldn't run it for long at 220 deg. for sure.

Is it possible that you've got a later model waterpump on an earlier model engine block ? Some of the later model engines turn the water pump CCW because of the way the serpentine belt is routed. Just a thought.
