Testing new CAM Grind and phasing

Waterthunder

Well-known member
I expect to see over 500 foot pounds of torque around 3,600RPM and 630HP at 6,000RPM with what I'm presently testing. This new combination is very promising and I will be installing this motor on my next ride boat for testing I expect it to idle smoother then anything I have previously built! The prop guy's are going to love the way it idles this should solve those pesky idle vibrations!

Thunder, is the LS motor able to take thrust loads like in a DD application ? Could a thrust bearing be added at the rear or center main, or is it even needed ?

I wouldn't build a DD LS1 unless it had a thrust plate. I designed one that had a thrust bearing and incorporated the prop adaptor with a machined recess that transferred the thrust to a plate on the rear of the block. Then I realized why bother with this, just bolt on a gearbox and swing more prop. I would strongly recommend against ever building a LS1,LS2,LS6,LS7 in a DD application I believe someone will get hurt the thrust bearing is very narrow and it's in the middle of the block and the crank can not take the force of the thrust. The old motors are border line and do occasionally fail but the torque that theses motors put out is substantially higher and I feel will cause engine main web or crank failure!

Thanks, just wondered. That makes perfect sense.

Dont'ya forget to post those photos of the new build. I'm lookin forward to em.

YOU BEEN READING THE OLD FIGURES ! IN 1972 THEY CHANGE IT TO 325 HP 500 TORQUE ! (SAME MOTOR) JUST DIFFERENT MATH ! IT TAKES CUBIC DOLLARS TO MAKE 400 HP AT 4200 !BUT THE POUNDS ARE CLOSE !

well same except lowerd compression, different cam grind ,the dyno numbers are different fatboy is right because of the way dyno results changed more on the lines of todays ways.although i am not a huge fan of flashcraft they dyno'd a 70 500 against a later model 500 and numbers were not that much different.

ps. did not mean to hijack the thread i was just making a joke.

That is why I posted it will make over 500ft pounds I never post a peak number because it always starts dyno war! I will say it will make more then 500ft pounds now. However remember with allot less weight and everything is bran new. When I'm done I fully expect to see near 600ft pounds with the smoothest idle possible.

1997 ls 2 10.9 to 1 hp 400@5200 ft lbs @4000 395 bone stock with factory efi enquiring minds got to know thunder, i know your not gonna tell but how do you do it. an make it live

Everybody believes you need to run a torque (RV)-30/30 or the infamous 3/4 race cam in an airboat. I run huge cam's to allow air flow but Taylor everything else around torque. This way the motor still makes torque but when it hit's the upper RPM's the cam still makes power. If you stick a torque cam in the motor it will fall on it's face and quit climbing horsepower wise! I know a few people have called Comp trying to get my grind numbers and then after they get some basic info they argue with the Comp Tech that the cam can't possibly work in a airboat! I spoke with my Buddy at Comp yesterday and he told me a funny story about this! There is a ton more of reasons why a torque cam is not the best way to go in a airboat but I ain't divulging any of that info besides everyone say's it wouldn't work anyway!

A Cadillac does turn in some pretty healthy numbers if it is stock or modified what is the major different between an LS1 and a 472/500 Cadillac? Is it weight?Or reliability because one is old and one is new? What is the weight difference between a 500 Cadi and an LS1.? Not trying to start a war just honestly curious.

here is a weight of this combo

I just pulled this from a web site so I'm sure it's of a little. Cadillac V8 472-500 625!
I know a SBC with aluminum heads and water pump weighs 550lbs and remeber the 625lbs and the iron heads SBC at 600lbs is with out a gearbox. I have been told a hundred times the Caddy is only 50 pounds more then a SBC so 625 sounds close add a gearbox and your looking at 705 pounds where a LS1 is only 471 with a gearbox!

Your close Dave 679 With alum intake Rods and kb s pistons and Rotator ! They say they are lighter than small block if you put it a diet ! But havent seen that yet ! They lighten them for power boat ! Now days with the new rules the motors has to be in a production for a few year or something like that @ Just read a lot of stuff about it !So they go for cubes or the grunt and less cubic dollars ! :D

I don't see a rebuilt Caddy being much if any cheaper! Their cool motors and I like them I just don't like depending on finding used cores. Personally I prefer the OLD's 455 for a bunch of reasons but they all have an advantage somewhere.
