The Allisons are gorgeous. The last year that the Miss Budweiser ran one, Bernie Little, the team manager said that they were getting "in excess" of 4500 hp out of theirs!!! They sound like one huge, ripping exhaust note .... smooth beyond belief.

But would we want that kind of weight to deal with? And would we need that kind of horsepower to make the statement that we want to make? After all, she's gonna' have to be quiet too ......

Oh,

I guess I'll have to return the allison

What did you have in mind. A liberty?

edit: oops I just checked, you did say Liberty. Well, might as well dream big.

MY, my ... what have you there! Isn't that a pretty one. I'm a little surprised that it only turns 1800 rpm, but then I remembered that you can almost hear every cylinder fire on some of those vintage engines.

I paged over on that same site and fell in love with that J3 Cub.
So many toys ..... so little time.

I am going to jump in on this one. Think how big the radiator would have to be. But what a ride it would be. My Dad worked on race boats with these engines when they came to Houston to race in Clear Lake. He tuned them and ran them in a test cell set up for big engines. I got to go along as a "go-for" The test prop or club was handled with a small hoist. Those engines were even impressive on the test stand. My Dad learned his skills in WW2. As a side note there was a barge in LA. that had four very large radials on it, they were ran in tractor orientation. I could never find out what they used it for.

Matt, you said that you're not a business expert, but you sound pretty well grounded to me!

The Organization is the key, especially early-on, and it would have to be funded independently of all of us. There would have to be a core group of people (I think we have that already) who would drive the project, and with a common vision of what the finished boat would become. My vision of that is of almost starke simplicity, but with incredible attention to craftsmanship and detail.

We have an enormous resource of talent already right here on SAO, so we already have the most important component ..... experience. But if Thunder wants to build the engine, then he should be paid for it. If Faron wants to build the rigging, then he should be paid for it as well. No member of the core group should have to come away from the project feeling anything less than good about their participation in it.
That would make it all worthwhile for all of us.

I wonder if August Busch IV likes airboats ....... ?

Ken

Thunder .... What would you think about a V-12 Cadillac? I think Lincoln made one too (?). One of those would have the right "feel" for a vintage looking boat, and would cost a whole lot less than any aircraft engine from that era.

What kind of horsepower could you reasonably expect to get out of one if it was built with a little hot rod know how .... 300 ?

Ken

A friend of mine has a V-12 lincoln in a boat. It's a flathead and it's pretty wimpy. I believe the cadillac is a flathead also, but I don't know anything about them.

Jaguar made a fairly cool v-12 and they can be had cheap. BMW made a nice one and they are cheap also, but the aftermarket parts are not there. I know of a Lamborghini 4 liter V-12 that was for sale. It's a double overhead cam beauty, but the parts are scarce.

You probably want vintage American, so I'll check out the Cad.

Jim

My two cents:
Cadillac is an American tradition. It represents excellence. That's why the cliche goes "It's the Cadillac of....whatever". So I think it would be the #1 choice for a new/vintage airboat, made in the USA.

Matt,

Ranger made an inverted aircooled 6 that would work, they also made an inverted aircooled V-12 that is so rare that I have never seen one.

All of the really cool old aircraft engines are sought after by the antique aircraft restorers and they have bid the prices out of sight, PLUS the engine collectors will be very reluctant to give up one for an airboat. They like to see them go into the restored airplanes that originally used them.

I'm not saying that itr is impossible, but it would be difficult. You never know what's around the next bend.

Here are some pictures:

Man, you guys have been thinkin! I could hear the gears turnin' all the way up here!

Jim, I like Matt's notion about Made in America. I'd forgotten about that Ranger 6 ..... pretty, but probably hard to find and impossible for parts as you said. I do like the idea of air cooled engine just because it gives the appearance at least of being lighter, and would eliminate the need for a lot of extra plumbing on the boat. The installation could be made
extremely sanitary with some thought to incorporating oil and fuel lines
into the rigging.

Ken

I have not checked on the Rangers in years, but out of all the engines I mentioned, that would probably be the easiest to get. The six. As you know Ken, that engine has to be pulled through before every start to check for hydraulic lock. They came in 175 and 200 I believe.

I have some contacts in the antique and classic division of the EAA. If you get serious about a Ranger I will check on them. There was a PT-19 here in Eustis about 7 years ago that was flown regularly. It was sold to England.

Jim

A V-12 Ryan Falconer would have the look of a WW2 Fighter engine. They are made in California for scale Mustangs.
