Thanks anyway! :)

OK,

I removed the add about the Ranger V-12's for sale. If anyone is serious, please contact me for the info.

Jim

Thanks, Bob!

Your comment earlier about needing a hoist to move things around with the Allison engines was what brought me back to my senses! Horsepower can be a very powerful drug.......

If I had the extra money I would love to play with one but my wife would kill me for spending $15,000 on an Engine.

Matt,

Here's the deal on the V-12 Ranger as far as I can determine. It was used in only 3 airplanes. I don't think any are flying. The engine was unreliable due to overheating at low airspeed in one installation. That particular airplane was know as the worst airplane of WW2. I don't think that would be a problem with proper cooling system design, but it might be.

Of the other two planes, one was experemental and is probably not around. I think two were installed in T-6's. One is restored in a museum and not flown. I would not fly this engine either. There is probably more to the story and I will keep researching.

I am getting to the probability that there is little or no demand for the engines or parts. The only person likely to buy one would be for display which is what they would best be suited for.

It would be cool to play with them, but they might turn into a nightmare.

If anyone is interested I still have the info.

Jim

Yes,

It is aircooled and the production airplane was the curtiss seagull/seamew. the airplane was so bad that a lot of them were used as flying targets. I think what you are looking at is the intake.

Jim, you really want one of these don't ya' ......

K.

Well, ah,er, what gave you that idea? Is it because I already figured out the headers, cooling, and other stuff?? And there is bound to be an alternator drive on there somewhere. You have to admit, it is cool, if not successful. 565 pounds 500 hp.

The intake pipes lead into the supercharger. I have other pictures.

Jim

I agree .... that is one sexy rascal. I can see it in 'show condition' with powder coated this and that, hand formed large diameter brass intake runners, rocker covers polished brass ...... Oh, dear.

Ann is punching me in the ribs right now saying "No Way!"

But if I should get those right six numbers tonight, you and I will fly to N.Y. , buy them both, and then supervise shipping. Fair enough?

K.

I think we can get them for a lot less. I don't believe there is much demand. And, I get cheap tickets for both of us remember? real cheap. Airplane up rental truck back. With a hydraulic tailgate.

Jim

The overheating had to be because of the heat that was concentrated in that long "V" between the two cylinder banks. An airboat could bring the headers down and away from that valley into one or two large mufflers several inches away, near the sump of the hull. An air scoop could be formed-up that would allow the prop to draw cooling air through that area.

Plus, we have synthetic oil now ..... unheard of in '42.

K.

exactly, or even a big electric fan and big alternator. Or a multiblade fan ala helicopter engines.

addictive, huh?

Jim

An efficient fan couldn't require more than 10 - 12 amps. You'd want an alternator anyway because the starter motor is probably huge. Of course that can probably be rewound too, to more modern standards.
