guys my boat is set up with a pedal throttle witch is great for most people but not me  I have a bad leg and have trouble working the pedal even in my truck walking etc.. most of the time if I watch what I do and take my meds I am ok but yesterday I ran the boat for 5-6 hours straight looking around and am paying for it today been in bed most of the day with pain that exceeds even my meds

what I need it some ideas for a finger throttle to hook up my throttle cable. does anyone have this set up please post pictures and any info

Thanks,
Robert

what I have seen (on more than one boat) is a hand break off a bicycle on the steering stick with the same cable that goes to your peddle. Just move it to the steering stick and away you go. I hear stories of back in the day when guys out here had lawn mower hand throttles on their boats. No spring return and they had them get away from them a time or two. Said they did that so they could push when they got stuck alone. Don't think I'd want one set up that way but the break lever seemed to work great.

With some customization and a bit of practice maybe you could have the throttle moved to the left side. Just a thought :?: .

We used a deadman throttle in hydroplane racing. You can look at one boatdesigns.com they worked great on the race boat.

goldhunter_2 there are some pix in the gallery of a boat that is equip with a hand throttle that was built for a girl. maybe someone can pull up for.

I agree with Nebraska ...... a quality brake lever. In fact I have a nice one that was made for a a dirt bike.
PM me your address and I'll send it to you. If you think it'll work, send me the postage. If not, just send it back.

Fair enough?

nebraskaairboater,
That sounds about like what I was thinking just some type of finger throttle , I will try to look at the cable tomorrow if I am feeling up to it.

AirRanger,
I drive the truck left footed and have quit a bit of practice with it. I would really prefer a hand throttle though.

OVER BUDGET,
I didn't even think about a deadman throttle if the finger throttle does not work out I may go that route

darkwader,
I will try to figure out where the gallery is and look for it. I just normally read o the forum

Olf Art,
yes that is more then fair thank you. let me look at the cable and see if that type setup will work hopefully tomorrow if I can

Might try picking up a brake lever and clamp with the brake cable at a bike shop ,should clamp right to your steering stick .

Goldhunter2,

Here's the image that Darkwader was talkin about. Not enough coffee yet to get the pic to display properly.

Cntry141iq's photo gallery has several of the same boat.

Hope this helps.

How about using a hydraulic setup like they run on sandrails. Instead of using a foot pedal you can run a clutch master cylinder from a motorcycle and clamp it right onto the steering stick and use it like a weedeater throttle. I have driven a boat with a bicycle brake lever and cable setup like this on a volkwagon airboat along time ago and it seemed to work pretty good, and a hydraulic setup wouldnt be difficult to do.

Here is a typical buggy hydraulic throttle.

basketcase0302,

Thanks I was looking for it but never could find it in the gallery. that looks more like the deadmans throttle spoke of earlier but would solve the problem by allowing me to use on hands instead of my leg

Larry,
Thanks but I really need to move away for the pedal all together I am just limited on what and how much I can do with my leg /foot so I really want to move to a hand type control to make my time out there more enjoyable the deadmans throttle or the finger throttle seem to be what I think will work best I am going to look at the boat and cables today and see how it will set up

O i went ok and looked it over the throttle cable is just a push/pull type with a threaded shaft on the end so I should be able to make a brake handle work out fine.

thanks everyone for all the ideas :D

Olf Art,
I will send you a pm , Thanks

Gold, I'll send you both a clutch handle and a brake handle. They were for a race bike once that never got built. One of them should work. You may need to solder a stop on the end of the cable but I'm sure you'll be able to work that out.

Putting the lever on your steering stick will make that a pretty busy place ....... when you get a look at it you might want to try to mount this lever on your right side.

Aw geez .... but then who would hold the beer ? What was I thinkin :? .

it has threads on the cable so I can just use nuts but if I need to add a stopper I can figure that out.

I have a cup holder right there for my beer

What I use on my boat is a throttle lever off of a old boat. This way I can control it by hand. Also when I'm out or a long cruse this makes it nice. Just set the throttle and forget it. It also makes for quick throttle changes when necessary.

The more I read and think about this the more questions i have... First the guys i know that tried the bike brake handle for their bowfishing boats have found that for their trolling fans it is ok but for the big drive engine they have scraped all of their ideas because 1- the even light spring pressure needed to pull the carb to idol when you let go --- it only takes a short time before your hand gets real tired and starts to ake from holding the throttle pressure. --- 2- If you put the brake handle on the forward side of the steering stick so you use your fingers to control the gas --- If your steering stick goes forward and aft for control what is going to happen if you have to make a hard left turn pull back on the steering stick and WIDE OPEN ON THE THROTTLE. Now I too like a cold one when on the water. but with the boating laws and the cost involved if you don't blow the right numbers when asked to. I think I would relay think about a right hand throttle set up with leverage like your steering stick has and so you pull up or back depending on if it is mounted to your side or front for more gas . This is because what direction do you go when you hit something -- forward --- shutting things down.
Just my thoughts I hope what ever you do it works and works well for you. Merry Christmas.

Ron,
In all honesty I don't drink alcohol anymore it does not mix well with my MEds but do have a cup holder there for sodas. my boat has a spring return on the rear so if I let off it drops to idea (if you can all that idea). I am not 100% sure if i will mount it to the stick or on the right until I see the handle it self.

If you are referring to the throttle handle I was thinking of a miniature steering stick with the leverage below the pivot point and a short handle out of the way on the right side. But in a comfortable long term working position. The handle could be either up and down like the steering stick or have the top bent on a right angel so your hand is on a horizontal handle.
