Timed Obstacle Course Racing

Gbenzx

Well-known member
They doit with cars, aircraft, cycles, atv's & even horses :)

Has anyone done this with Airboats?

Pat got me thimking abt this on Cntry's thread abt coast guard boats when he told us how to practice our operating technique.

It would appear that finding a location where a course could be laid out wouldn't be too difficult in mid or south Fl.

Oval Track :)

Thanx, Gben

I believe that they did have oval track airboat racing years ago.

A flat course about 1 inch of water would be an awesome challenge. I have always thought that a rice field in Louisiana or Texas that has been completely leveled would make a great challenge course set up for time trials. Have dual poles that you have to go through, if you knock them down you get a time penalty. Have a long windy course. It would be a blast.

You could make it where people really couldn't get much speed up. I think it would be an attention getter for drivers.

Anyone that can draw?

If so just pencil it out the way you think it should work :)
If possible need something that can be streached or condensed in order to fit the lay of the land in more than one location. Make it as tight or as loose as one can imagine. Performance class can meet themselve coming back where the big boys need a little more leg room.

Entry fees can be contributions in the beginning to build a fan base & probly gain enough to begin small ads & purses that will surely grow.

Parking for autos will be a prime consideration also but here again Airboat People can make it work. If nothing more than a simple Figure 8 course the people will come.

Thnx, Gben

Ok fellows,I have not been on this thing in a while.Got knocked off and thanks to Rick I am back on.You guys are talking about "Oval raceing" and they used to do it a long time ago.Well yes they did and back in those days it was called "Roundy Round" raceing.I am sure Paul will kill me for this one,but when your proud of someone, well heck I say share it.!! Guess you could say I am bragging on him, well heck lets just say I am.But in our time of "Roundy Round" He could NOT be beat.He was the very best there was.So if you want to know about "Roundy Round" Just ask Paul Dixon.Just don't tell him his wife said so.!!

Nice to see you posting again Carol. My screen name used to be cracker when you were on here last.

Carol, I remember those Paul Dixon racing days.

I was only 9 or 10, but you got me trying to remember where they did that in Central Florida back then.

Seems like I remember a track west of Orlando, maybe around Mascotte, FL and also somewhere else on the St. Johns, maybe on the side of SR520 or US192.

It'd be neat to have some pictures of those races in the Vintage Gallery if anyone has some.

What y'all are talking about is an AIRBOAT RODEO -- and lots of clubs do it. The Citrus County Airboat Alliance (CCAA) is having an Airboat Rodeo on Saturday, October 15th, in Lake Hernando near Inverness. It's no longer Oval Racing, due to the dangers. Now it's an timed-run obstacle course, one boat at a time, quickest time wins. Last year we had cash prizes to the first 7 places. Bill Johns, of Crystal River, took first place last year running a 4-cylinder Lycoming -- so it's not always the biggest horsepower that wins. YOU'RE ALL INVITED TO COME AND PARTICIPATE or just be a spectator. It will be at the Picnic Park we recently built. Don't know how to give directions to it precisely, but if we know you're coming, someone can lead you to the park from the Hernando Boat Ramp. There are charcoal grills at the park, so you can cook out if you wish, or just bring a picnic. Email info@citrusairboat.org or respond on this thread for more information. Lots of fun! Make sure your bilge pump works, and when things look bad, stand on the throttle and don't let up til you hit solid ground!

There are a few photos from last year's Rodeo at http://www.citrusairboat.org/photogalle ... o2004.html. Check them out!

I have video footage somewhere of my dad (Stan Floyd) racing like that in Melbourne, I'll get more details and let you guys know.

Thanx Guys

And Hot Doggg, we have good competition already looks like right there in Citrus County :) Best get some ballons tied off in the water or stakes as Pat says & begin to polish up on timing.

Swampjet, have ya'll any written rules for classes or courses that may be adapted? If only one boat on the course at the time thats fine but long term something will be needed for different classes & safety considerations. As rules can be need something first that most can live with & still not discourage. Needless to say, experienced folks only for this one.

Need Coordinators somewhere near mid or south Fl to bring the teams from each group together for shootout & state competition events.

Can these courses become a part of the speed races like we've seen at St Cloud I think it was recently? Is ground running feasible? Accessible? Lot's more questions that need tobe circulated to every group for their input, approval & support.

FAA comes to mind with their wide area coverage & Thunder with his racing experience & organization in that part of the world. Everyone can race somewhere today but need simple roots & structure to build upon & grow up.

Yes Rick one of the main tracks that they raced was in Mascotte,it was a place that belong to Don Pierce. He and Paul were kinda the Grandaddy's of Roundy Round. They also had Saw Grass Park in Ft.Lauderdale,Tamiami Trail,Rumuda Ranch in Naples,Ronnie Burgerone's track in Lauderdale.Just to name a few.And yes he has a lot of pictures,I"ll try to dig some of them up and see if we can get them on here.Back in those days they had roll cages on their race boats.Kept him from serious injury many times. He used to smoke them big ole Black Jack cigars and he rolled the boat one time, got his head stuck under water but when he came back up he still had that darn cigar in his mouth.Lot of fun but could be harry sometimes.Lots of good stories .
