Timing!

Does anyone know why my boat runs better with the more Advance I give it? Bumped it up today just by ear until I didn't get any popping from the carb. checked it with a timing light tonight and at 700 rpms I have 25deg. advance. But it is running great I gained 3 to 400 rpms. and put more pitch to it. is probrably the springs in the distributor? MSD hei, and is this way to much advance?
Thanks,
John

I would run 34 degree of total timing! Have the advance as fast as you can make it! I would run the weakest springs in your curve kit! 34 is safe and I wouldn't run any more timing with a 2.38 ratio. 2.38 put's too much of a load on the motor even though you have a smaller size boat!

This might be a dumb question but I need to ask so I do it correctly.

What rpm do you set initial timing at and how do you set total timing when the marks only go to 10?

My boat runs great but has a hesitation when I stomp it. The hesitation gets less as I advance the timing. Right now it is what I would guess 14 BTDC its a little past the 10 mark at around 600 rpm with no vac advance hooked up.

Just want to set it correctly. It starts easy and never runs on. But if I can advance it for a little mor power and be safe I will. Its a 500 caddy stock direct drive.

Thanks,

Dan

heres the problem im having with my 10x7 alum deckover 350 dd 74cc heads performance products dual plane intake 600 cfm holley and has a small cam not sure on what size but its swingin a 68lml30 sen stick prop - ok well i had some carb issues and im gettin them worked out and im back to timing i put the welded dist back in there cuz the other seemed to be stickin or something but i have power now its just when i nail it it only has a lil bit of power not enough to get on plane but if i hold it at wide open throttle and advance the distributor it opens up and goes now if i let off at this timing setting wich is around 33* give or take a degree . i try to hit the throttle again and it spit and sputters pops a lil bit and just doesnt have the low end it had when it was retarded a lil it also does the same with the dist that has the spring kit any suggestions? valves are adjusted right ive went over them 3 times already also it does get enough rpm to push the boat sittin in the yard it doesnt push it fast but it move at a snails pace

Nebraska,

I just got back from getting a spring kit and it says with the lightest springs if you are at 10deg. @ 1000rpms you will be 23 deg. when you hit 2500rpms and stay @ 2500 the rest of the way. I'm gonna play with it a little in a bit. I guess if I set it @ 20deg. @ idle I should come out with 33 deg. total. with the heavy springs set @ O deg. B.T.D.C you hit 23deg. @ 4000rpms and stay. Big difference. I'll let you know how it works out in a bit.

Thanks Thunder,
John

ok let me rephrase that i typed it backwards when i retard it it gets more top end but is crppy bottom end but if i advance it it gets better bottom but no top

so a basic HEI Distributor has about 13 degrees of advance stock? It's just how fast it comes in? Probably should get a curv kit and put lightest springs and heavy weights? Am I ok on the timing by advancing it till it starts a little harder or should I measure and put some kind of marks on the timing cover so I have a better idea of where it is timed. I guess how do you "set" the timing to 34 if the marks only go to 10?

Thanks,

Dan

use a timing light that has a degree adjuster on it, turn the dial to what degrees you want it to be and on your timing tab it should be at TDC. The spring kit at the speed shop with the weights and the springs was only $9.00. I'll get mine more precise tonight when it gets dark I can't see to well right now,so far my cough and flat spot went away :D

Been reading all of this for months and still can't get the hesitation out of my motor.
I have a ZZ4, 2:1 belt drive,3blade 80" power plus, 8x15' hull, all .190 with 3/8"
poly on sides and bottom. I have my blades set so I run 4500 rpms w.o.t.
I put a DP 700 holly with the .37 squirters and lightest springs in the dist.
get my total advance by 1700 rpms.
Also, it is cold up here, about 10 degrees right now.
Any suggestions?
