Too much pitch

I was test driving a boat I was thinking about buying. 14' rivermaster sbc with cast heads, rotator gear box. The boat was set up by Hoffman. The boat to me seemed sluggish. After talking to the owner he said he added more pitch to the prop (power shift) to get the rpm's down to get better fuel mileage. I didn't have the boat wide open but I would say about 4 to 4.5k is all it will spin up. If I took some of the pitch out of it would it perfom much better or is this boat just a barge. Thank in advance to any thoughts on this.

I think you need to play with it and try different settings on the prop. That is the beauty of an adjustable prop over a wood or other fixed pitch prop. If you put more specifics on here about the engine there is plenty of MOTOR HEADS on here to give you GOOD ADVICE. I am not one of those people. I don't think it is a barge but if it is put it on a diet or put some more horses in it. You have all the basics to build from.

I agree with cntry.

Is it a two or three blade powershift. What size motor? 350 or 454?

I have played with the sensenich 3 blades pitch quite a bit. We have tried more pitch to save fuel and it will make the ship a bit sluggish. Slow to get up on plane, but you typically can run on plane at lower RPMs.

I know a 350 with a 3 blade Powershift that will only turn up about 4200.

I'm sorry for my previuos post. I had a massive BRAIN FART!!! A few too many Coronas and a lively party aren't the best combination for dispensing advice.
