Top Speed?

cowboy

Moderator
What's the top speed of some of the boats out there?

I have personally seen my little 4 cyl do 95 miles per hour with a wood stick prop on it.......

While headed south on the turnpike tied down to the trailer!

:p

That is VERY funny Cowboy!!!!

We are still getting a grip on the features of the GPS and have found where we can reset the max speed display on the trip computer. So I hope to begin noting our max speed. Yet another instrument to help check different modifications we make.

So far, from watching the speedometer on the GPS, the fastest I think we go in the 'moodmobile' in the best of skinny water conditions is only about 35 mph. A race boat? - not by a long shot! LOL

matt.

Yeah Mood,
I'm looking forward to alot more ifo from my new gps as well.
All the thing you mentioned, plus:
Average speed.
Overall distance traveled.
Saving track data, and have the abillity to track back, especially at night. This would allow easy return to a trail that's tough to locate. That would prevent busting miles of tall grass, while trying to find the trail.

Also looking forward to uploading tracks to Google Earth, and seeing them on their sat photos.

Not to mention a new found confidence to explore areas unkown to me.

I know most folks around here have had gps in thier bag of tricks for a long time, just wish I'd started sooner.

Got GPS? If you don't, get one. I bet you'll be glad you did.

BTW,
aT 95 MPH that boat rode smooth as glass. At least it looked that way in the rearview mirror.

I don't know in MPH how fast my boat goes but if any indication is given by the size/color of bruising from being punched in the back from passengers telling me to slow down.....I could safely say faster than it needs to!

10-4 dotson!

I don't really care how fast mine can go, just so long as it gets me there and back.

My boat will go anywhere a reasonable person would want to go.

Thats enough performance to satisfy me.

I learned along time ago, that he only time I ever busted my A$$, was when I was showing off!

Guess I dont feel like I gota prove anything to anybody. Not about airboating anyhow.

I was'nt trying to prove anything with this post either. I think it's funny.
As long as I'm entertained by it, then that's all I care about it.

cowboy,

My question is:

Is your truck that powerful that it can pull the boat at 95, or was the throttle tied down on the boat???

Or,......are you pullllling my leg?

Or,........how fast would it go with the throttle tied down on the boat??

And, some one (like maybe your brother) should stay in the boat to monitor rpm's. I would do that to my brother in a heartbeat.

Cowboy,
That was my take on it and I didn't see your post as proving yourself. I've been curious to see what kind of replies you get. Most of the people I talk to will agree on the wife/girlfriend punches! I base speed on comfort level and that is it. I think my triple rudder setup is too sensitive for high speeds...at least it feels that way to me but it makes cruising nice. Is it top speed or the thrill of acceleration as the driving force for more power? Top speed is scary....acceleration is fun!

I don't care how fast my boat is. If I need more of a thrill I will go find a narrower trail to run at the same speed. I like hp to keep from getting stuck. I hate getting stuck.

You got that right cntry. Less mistakes are made when you have the horsepower rather than compensating with speed.

i was told by an old airboater once that its not how fast your boat is but where it can take you is what matters.

The use of speed to overcome horsepower deficit is what makes airboating a great spectator sport. I was at the ridge on kiss. and this guy was trying to come up beside me and lacked the power so he was trying to use speed and budwieser to compensate for it. My girlfriend hollered at me after his second or third attempt and said " he almost rolled that thing" I said yep just give him time he will. Well they decided it was the driver not the boat that was having trouble so after a driver change and a new beer in hand they successfully rolled the boat over. We went over to see if he was ok and so did his buddies. he was still knockin dirt off while his budds were pickin up the buds that flew out of the cooler. No one was hurt no beers were broke and after some pullin and pushin the cage was sort of round again and although the wire was missing in the side panels he drove it home. The prop was fine even though it went into the ground about 6 inches or so and the motor was ok as well. My girl friend was getting on me saying " see what you started" oh well it all ended fine no harm no foul I have seen him out since and the boat is fine. I wasn't showin off I was just parkin where it wasn't very crowded that day. CCHART made up there before he re-did his motor I believe. Thunder definetly made it up there no problem easier than I did for sure.

4 cyl Lycoming, gps @ 40 mph. 11.5 glass hull, Cypress series prop, homemade mufflers, 2600rpm, full tank, 2 people, std fishing gear & cooler.

600cc sportbike, Power Commander, pipe, 200# rider w/gear 167mph indicated and slightly climbing. Prolly 150 actual.

More skeered on the boat.

Cowboy,

75  (behind the truck)! 22  (not behind the truck)!

Saw the GPS at 39 a couple of months ago before I got "sceered" and let off!

Basketcase

Aww cmon basket you were going 39 on land trying to get back before dawn kicked your butt new years eve LOL You almost was passing me I had to try hard to stay outta your way.

Well with the old scared up poly I top out with just me in the boat around 40 That's fast enough for me.

I have come to the conclusion, that you cant beat going fast, and you can beat having the horsepower to climp a PINE TREE!.. There is nothing like crusing across the water, and a boat coming beside you trying to race, and you push that throttle to the floor and spank his A** across the lake! But you also cant beat running through the woods chasing deer, and not even worring about getting stuck!! So i have come to the conclusion that i will build a light but strong set of metal work(3/4 engine stand, 1/2 inch footstand), and a 12ft. hull, with ether an 0-470 angle valve, or a 0-540 stright valve.. Really leaning towards the 0-540... But i have to sell my big hunt boat first!! So hopfully one day soon ill have a boat that can chase deer, run through the trees, have the power to not worrie about getting stuck, and the SPEED to MASH ON IT across the lake, and race a little!! As of right now i'd say my boat does about 50-55..but i want a litle more, more like 70-90..yeaahhh!!

I think I'll put in Friday afternoon and report back with results for my 160 (Lycoming O-320 H2AD).

I would imagine it'll be about the same as my old angle valve 170 (around 40 mph) unless I find some real skinny water & a tail wind. Under those conditions, that 160 thinks it's a 200 and I start having a real good time. :hello1:

14' Diamondback with grass rake + 425hp 454 + Stinger "Soft Drive" Gear Reduction + 3 B Powershift = 54.9 MPH
I've been as fast as 72MPH on a Glades style full deck O-540 with 5 blade Warp Drive (eyes watering, face felt like it was peeling off, white knuckled cause I wasn't driving)
A couple weekends ago I was coming home with the boat on Alligator Alley keeping up with traffic, 75 MPH +-. As I passed the boat ramp at mm31N, I saw a guy on a Hot Rod 6cylinder full deck. I honked the horn and waved as I went by. I saw him "Get on It" in the canal alongside the road. In no time he was even up with me in the truck, he looked over, waved, floored it and then he passed me like I was doing 30 in the fast lane. He had to be well over 100. The boat was FAST and looked like he was riding on glass. TOO much for me

Best I have done was around 53 in a boat American built and around 50 in a Robicheaux. Little too much for me. That Kline's 13 footer will do around 43 GPS with it still climbing, but I never had the guts to stay on it. I saw someone hit a coot at about 35 MPH and he about flipped before he got his bearings  . Just don't feel the need for speed. I not embarrassed I am sceered. :D

A blast to run hogs as well, don't know how fast they go but doubt it is above about 20 in a sprint. Blacktopping those boars is a blast but man they get mad. You know after you blacktop them, they want to fight really bad. Especially if you don't run them first, just sprint up to them and blacktop em. Spin her around and often they are coming for you.

Only good hog is a dead hog.
