APOLLO BEACH - Silent prisons, submerged and abandoned, are killing marine life in Tampa Bay and its estuaries. On Friday, though, teams of volunteers set out to free the surviving captives, count the dead and destroy the barnacle-encrusted traps.
Airboats fanned out from Williams Park about 8 a.m. in search of derelict crab traps, difficult to find on a windy day with less-than-optimum tides.
Still, the 22 volunteers from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Florida Airboat Association and others managed to gather....
