. . . Locally, the Florida Airboat Citizen Emergency Response Team impressed me the most. As many as 500 airboat pilots volunteered to help rescue survivors but were hampered when the Federal Emergency Management Agency refused to authorize them to enter New Orleans.
They did not give up. They spent their own money to purchase about 500 gallons of fuel and enlisted congressional help to cut through the red tape. On Saturday, 100 airboaters left Florida to save lives.
