turbo prop

anyone out there running a turbo prop, or for that fact an 8 blade turbo prop? got a 13ft panther with a 454 2.38 and an 8 blade 80in, and she is just a dog, running the 80in at about 14deg turning around 5400 and it runs decent but just isnt where it needs to be, but to get to the point is anyone running the 4 blade turbo prop which would be the 8 blade and if so how much better then a regular 8 blade does it push? probly going to pick up the hub tommorow and try it out, what pitch and all that are u running in it? does the pitch have to be staggered. any info would be greatly appreciated thank.

Big 3, I have a 6 blade turbo prop with an 80" dia. I'm quite happy with it is quieter and I believe that it produce as much thrust or more than my original 5 blade 80". Reading your post I believe that you have to much pitch or blade angle, 14deg at the tip means that at the 3/4 mark your pitch is to great causing the blade to stall and not produce thrust. The pitch angle at the tip should be some were between 7&11 deg. I am going to write an article later this month on the importance of pitch angle and prop dia. ZoomZoom

Hey Mike, I have to agree with ZoomZoom, tried 14 deg with my 80" warp and it was a total dog, it had no push or top-end. Went back to 12 deg the next day, I may try 11 deg but I'll be turning 6200 rpm, oh well let it eat. :D

hey jack when u put 14 in yours what R's did you turn? we dropped a valve 2 weeks ago at the bluff and just took it off and put the motor on greg stevens gave us and it runs a whole lot better but we have a lot of pitch, we hit something with 2 blades so they are shorter so we put about 2 degrees more pitch in them than all the others, now the boat runs a whole lot better than the other motor we are turning around 5200-5300 with 15deg in the small blades and 13-14deg in the longer blades, but the boat just seems to not ride on a plane unless ur turning 4000 now this could be because of the steel headed big block, or that the prop isnt at optimum tip speed, i think we are going to throw the roller rockers on it this week and take a lil pitch out. im deffinitly missing that aluminum headed 383 right now the boat isnt as fun anymore she used to jump with the stroker now it just "RIDES" lol.

I recently just switched from a turbo to a wide blade, I started with a 6 blade standard hub and was running it at 16 degrees ( I have a SLIGHTLY built small block) when I switched to the turbo I was running it at 10 degrees on the front blades and 12 on the back. Didn't see any diffrence in the push ( maybe a hair LESS with the turbo ) . But the sound difference was ALOT. Running a Super wide now and what a difference. Both props have thier pro's and con's but ifin ya looking for push the superwide pushs WAY more but the warp drive was snappier and had faster responce then the other. Just my 2 cents on this , Hope it helps.

big 3 country 8, I have a 6 blade turbo 80" prop on my boat and I like everything about it. From what you have stated, you have one maybe two problems. First with 14 degs. at the tips you are stalling a portion of your blade, that portion is approximately 10" in from the tip. By that I mean that the blade angle in that area is greater than 15 degs. and the air will not follow the blade, which means that portion of the blade is doing little or no work. I suggest that you go back to the tips and back down the angle to 11 degs an this will allow all of the blade to produce thrust. If rpm becomes an issue then you are going to need more blades. Each Warp blade is good for about 50 hp. ZZ

ZoomZoom, might use the search feature here, a LOT has already been written here on the forum about props, diameter, circumference and efficiensies & etc.. Might save ya a lot of time, of course, ask the authors for permission to publish :)

Might be a time saver though.

Scotty
