Upstack?Downstack?

Are there any distinct disadvantages/advantages between the upstack cylinders and the downstack cylinders on the angle valve Lycomings? Just curious, Thanks.

Upstack is suppose to be a more efficient design because hot gases rises up instead of down. A down stack angle valve 0540 is 290hp and a upstack angle valve 0540 is 300hp.

I have a question about A/C motors. Being a car motor /reduction guy for as long as I have run airboats, I have seen a reference to a Gitsu motor. What type of motor is this? Also I am about to purchase my first A/c motor, a Cont. 520. I don,t know beans about A/c motors but am going to put it on a 13" hull so I will be asking a lot of questions in the future.

barhopper, the term gitsu is a slang for the GTSIO 520 CYLINDERS which were on the geared 520 engines they have more cooling fins and the intake is on top like the gpu. They also have 2 valve covers per cyl. Some of the newer engines such as the IO550G and IO550N also use these cylinders. here is an example of the gitsu cyl.

What do you mean "geared"? Is this a factory gear reduced motor?

I believe the GTSIO stands for Geared Torbo Supercharged Injected Opposed

Some sure nuff bad a$$ engines too.

Some day Ill have something like that if I win the LOTTO, Lots Of Toys To Offer

Its coming. Slow but steady. Got my rudder tophat bushings, Ill try to stop by John's and get them in during the day tomorrow. Spent the whole weekend working on the ham radio antennas. Mostly running all over the county picking up parts and pieces. More to do tomorrow too.

Should go for a short test ride maybe tomorrow evening on Sarno. Check with me or John sometime before quitting time. Theres hundreds of miles between now and then ya know. I havent run this much in over 4 years supporting the war. This is insane. I may have to go back just to slow down some. LOL No thread hijacking here, back to the GTSIO.........I wanna win the LOTTO so bad ! In fact Im going out in a few minutes and get more play cards and numbers.

Scotty, I know what you mean about the running for parts and pieces. I have been all over central fla. doing the same thing. As far as the thread hijacking I think that happened when we went to talking about Continental gitsu cyls. This started out as a lycoming upstack thread. Hope to see you on the river soon.
