Cheney Shoots Hunter

Talk About It: Post Thoughts

WASHINGTON (Feb. 12) - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" in a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday after he was shot by Cheney on a ranch in south Texas, said Katharine Armstrong, the property's owner.

He was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi.

Armstrong in an interview with The Associated Press said Whittington, 78, was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest during the incident which occurred late afternoon on Saturday.

"The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."
-Katharine Armstrong, ranch owner

She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington until the ambulance arrived.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president met with Whittington and his wife at the hospital on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," she said.

The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. The vice president's office did not disclose the accident until the day after it happened.

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and discovered a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

Whittington has been a private practice attorney in Austin since 1950 and has long been active in Texas Republican politics. He's been appointed to several state boards, including when then-Gov. George W. Bush named him to the Texas Funeral Service Commission.

McBride did not comment about why the vice president's office did not tell reporters about the accident until the next day. She referred the question to Armstrong, who could not be reached again Sunday evening.

Armstrong, owner of the Armstrong Ranch where the accident occurred, said Whittington was bleeding and Cheney was very apologetic.

"It broke the skin," she said of the shotgun pellets. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Cheney is an avid hunter who makes annual hunting trips to South Dakota to hunt pheasants. He also travels frequently to Arkansas to hunt ducks.

Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year and is "a very safe sportsman." She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

The 50,000-acre Armstrong ranch has been in the influential south Texas family since the turn of the last century. Katharine is the daughter of Tobin Armstrong, a politically connected rancher who has been a guest at the White House and spent 48 years as director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He died in October. Cheney was among the dignitaries who attended his funeral.

Associated Press writer Paul J. Weber in Dallas contributed to this report.

Man, I hate it for him ...... stuff happens and I'm just glad that the injuries to Mr. Whittington weren't more serious. Yes, it was probably a dumb shot to take, but in bird hunting you never, ever walk in front of a fellow hunter in the field ..... for this reason.

Wow, how stupid, I bet neither one has taken the Hunters Safety class.
Well, as far as that goes, they probably don't even have hunting permits.

Well, I guess ol' Dick took one for the team...that'll get the news networks of George's back for few days. Dick must have thought there were WMD's in that guy's jacket....

I wonder if they were using Secret Service agents instead of dogs to flush 'em out ...... .

Come on folks Cheney had the ball's to do what we all want to do SHOOT AN ATTORNEY. You go Dick he knew it would look suspicious using slugs while hunting Quail so he went with bird shot that was his only mistake!

Stuff happens!!!!!! :? No not to the VP of the U.S. it doesn’t!
Dumb shot to take! He was behind not in front and If memory serves me right you are responsible for your shot were ever it might go. As for Dick not reporting this accident for 24 hrs I'm sure the Alcohol was out of his system by then. :D

Aces, you seem to have a lot more information on this incident than I had when I posted.

I was willing to give the man (V.P. Cheny) the benefit of doubt, just as I would have you, because there is certainly no doubt in anyone's mind that what happened was not intentional.

As I wrote in my original comment, it was a dumb shot to take. And as I also originally wrote, I'm glad that the consequences weren't much worse.

Sorry you felt a need to take exception to my post.

I hope not to get to political but I have a question. How come everybody is getting down so hard on Steve Fossett and Richard Branson about wasting money on his plane and flight. I have heard so many talk shows bashing him, saying he should use his money better as in give it to charities. Is everybody taken the liberal mindset, He earned and built an empire it’s his money and he should do with it as he wishes. Trust me our government has taxed him enough and he has paid more in taxes than most of us will ever make in a lifetime. It kills me in today’s world people think somebody has money it’s wrong to spend it on themselves he didn’t make his millions from receiving charities. Millionaires like him who start the X prize and other voyages are inspiring people and business to push the envelope out side of the government programs and it’s bureaucracies. I hope to see private sector space flight and satellite launches. Space flight costs will come down and save us tax payers money and it will all be due to people like Mr. Fossett and Richard Branson. Dam 40 years ago he would be hailed as a hero with a ticker tape parade now he’s blasted as a money wasting billionaire that should give his money away. In today’s world Howard Hughes would be criticized for spending money to improve aviation instead of giving it to charities. I feel he is doing as much for my future if not more than the money I pay to taxes which I feel I’m seeing very little return. If I'm getting to politcal just tell me and I will go back to only airboat talk.

I agree, Thunder. It's his money, he can spend it however he wishes. If he did give it all to charity there would still be people wanting handouts. And if he is furthering science in his attempts, then more power to him. There are people who spend life savings buying Yugi-oh cards. Are they supposed to give it all away instead?? If you work for your money, You should be able to spend it however you like.
